On Saturday, March 17 there will be two half-day Race Committee training sessions.

The morning session, from 0830 – 1200, will be targeted specifically at Principal Race Officers (PRO) who will be conducting Offshore and One-Design races at FBYC this sailing season. The afternoon session, from 1300-1700, will be targeted at the other members of the Race Committee Team.

For those of you who attended the February 17th training session at FBYC (not a prerequisite), the morning session will build on the general knowledge developed here, but will be specifically about running races on our waters, under FBYC’s Sailing Instructions (SIs), using FBYC boats and equipment, etc. The format will involve only a small portion of lecture, primarily regarding our SIs and other tips, such as setting marks and starting lines. The balance of the session will be a highly interactive case study format, dealing with the 10-12 common problems and solutions encountered as PRO.

The afternoon session will be targeted at the Race Committee Team. Perfect for first timers and a good refresher for those with experience, all of the duties will be covered in detail in a highly interactive format. We will literally go through starting sequences, including signals, course board postings, course changes, course shortenings, and starting and finishing drills.

David R. Lee, a US Sailing Certified Club Race Officer since 1993, will lead the instructor team. Other members assisting will be Noel Clinard covering mark boat operations, Cathy Clark and Sharon Bauer reviewing timing, signaling, starting and finishing techniques. Mike Dale and Brooks Zerkle, both Certified Club Race Officers, will be on hand to share their experiences as well.

This is a “not to miss” training session for all members who anticipate working on a race committee this coming season. It will be fun, fast paced, and very interactive. Upon completion, you should have the knowledge and skills to confidently perform you RC duties this season.
