August OptiWeek

Due to high demand for OptiKids and Beginning Opti during Junior Week, we are offering a second session for beginning Opti sailors! - to be called August OptiWeek The session will run August 10-13, 2015, and will be for sailors aged 6-10.

The class will be taught by our professional coaching staff. Students will sail double handed in Optis, and will learn capsize recovery, “tiller towards trouble”, the “no-go zone”, and the basics of sail trim and how to steer with a rudder, as well as finding the wind, tacking and gybing, and more advanced concepts such as sailing alone. The class may be divided on the bases of age and prior experience, so that all may learn in an appropriate and fun environment.  FBYC will provide the Optis used in this class.

In addition to first time sailors, the class is open to any junior who has completed Opti Kids and/or Beginner during Junior Week, and who is seeking additional instruction and time on the water.

Please Note:

A parent or guardian for each child must be on site during the program.  This duty may be shared by parents.

Swim Test: All sailors must pass a simple two-part swim test on the first morning of camp. First, all sailors will be asked to swim the length of our pool (approximately 75') unassisted, without swim shoes and PFD. Sailors who satisfactory pass will then be asked to swim to our beach from the end of our pier in Fishing Bay, wearing swim shoes and a PFD.

Note on Safety: All participants during junior events, including juniors, adults and observers, must wear PFDs and water shoes while on or in the water (boating, swimming and wading), while on the beach, and while on the piers. No exceptions are allowed. Those who will not follow this rule will be excused from participation.

In case of inclement weather, class sessions will be held on-shore.

Payments are non-refundable after registration is closed.

To register, just go to https://www.fbyc.net/Registration/entry?event_id=1509.  Parents should carefully provide each sailor's experience in the comment section during registration, as classes may be sub-divided based on age, size, and relative sailing experience.

Daily Schedule:  More detail will be provided in the enrollment letter sent to registrants, but note that sessions are from 9:00 AM to Noon, and from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  Parents or guardians are responsible for lunch and must provide supervision during the lunch hour, and immediately before and after class.  August OptiWeek runs from Monday, August 10, through Thursday, August 13.  No evening events are planned.
