Presented in 1999 by Jan Monnier and Mike Fehn, two of junior sailing's biggest fans, with the intent of recognizing young sailors with potential and in hopes that this award will encourage a child and their family to continue racing an Optimist. The wooden plaque with the Opti half-hull was given to the Club with the intent that it be awarded in the future using the following criteria.

The Up and Coming Trophy is to be awarded annually to the junior member of Fishing Bay Yacht Club who meets the following qualifications: under 15 years of age; racing an Optimist in at least 3 FBYC or interclub race events which have Optimist fleets (Green Fleet included); and consistently shows enthusiasm for learning the art of sailing, determination to continue improving their racing skills and respect for other sailors.

If the Optimist class should no longer be an active fleet at FBYC, and a new class is used for training our newest sailors, the wording should be revised to reflect the new class, but all other criteria shall remain the same.
