YAM's to Host Inaugural Cornhole Tournament Labor Day Weekend

Blake Kimbrough on

Social Events

Who will take the podium as Fishing Bay's first ever Cornhole Championship Team??

This coming Sunday, immediately following Stingray Point Light racing and regatta awards, the YAMs are inviting anyone interested in informally strutting their cornhole skills to compete in the first every FBYC Cornhole Tournament. This is an excellent compliment to the BYO informal cookout Sunday evening after racing.

Boards, awards and tournament facilitation will be provided by the Young Adult Members committee. Hosted on the FBYC lawn, all you need to bring is your own beverages, a smile, and semi-competitive spirit to join in the fun. Actual start time will depend on conclusion of regatta awards.

The Rescue of Valiant and crew

Strother Scott on

Cruising News

Todays Richmond Paper had a first page article http://www.richmond.com/life/bill-lohmann/lohmann-after-rescue-at-sea-in-iceland-richmond-man-is/article_50d36b1d-5eaa-5c2e-b11d-ddc5854235ed.html about the rescue of Wes Jones and the crew of Valiant off Iceland.

Excerpts and Pictures below:

“All we can speculate is that one of those rogue waves crashed down us,” Piersol said as he sat and sipped coffee. “It broke on top of the boat and completely smashed the boat down into the water. Blew out the portholes on the low side. Took everything. It was a violent smashing. Wasn’t like a gentle, oh-my-gosh-we’re-rolling-over. It was, wham!

“Next thing you know, you’re rolling over and upside-down and water’s pouring over you. It took the boat over on its side and …

Water, water everywhere (including our spigots?)

David Lennarz on

Clubhouse News

According to a recent article in the Southside Sentinal, authored by Tom Chillemi, "the Middlesex Water Authority (MWA) voted on July 31 to accept a $3 million grant and a 2% interest rate loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).  The funding moves the $18 million Eastern Middlesex Water Project forward with the plan to pipe water from Rosegill near Urbanna to Topping and as far east as Stingray Point in Deltaville.

The MWA is an “authority” and is separate from the Middlesex government, and as an authority the customers would pay for the water system. The MWA will have 517 water customers, which is enough to pass scrutiny of the USDA’s regional office.

The USDA will …

Recently I received word that an old Richmond friend, Bill Westbrook, was retiring and returning to Irvington, Virginia where he had planted deep roots in the past. Bill had taken the reins as CEO of one of the largest and most successful advertising agencies in the Midwest, the Fallon agency in Minneapolis.

Now Bill has begun a new chapter in his life as an author of a series of historical sea novels that are set in the Caribbean during the late 18th Century.  To create this series …

Overwhelming Attendance and Good Times at the Women’s Sailing Clinic!

Caroline Patrick on

Club News

After briefly being sold out due to great registration response, we were able to secure more boats and 25 enthusiastic ladies attended the women’s sailing clinic! The group was comprised of 15 beginners and 9 racing students in a mix of Flying Scots, Front Runners, 420s, and even a Laser!

Lots of members took advantage of the clinic offered free as a membership benefit, as two-thirds of the group were members.

The beginner students enjoyed an instructor on each boat for hands-on learning and focused on helming, tacking, and trimming the main and jib. The racing students focused on starts, crew work, and sail trim.

About half of the ladies participated in the Seabreeze Regatta that afternoon to extend their …
