44-A Junior Mystery

FBYC History....

Junior Henry Hutcheson Trophy.jpg

Does anyone know the whereabouts of the trophy in this picture from the November 17, 1952 Times- Dispatch? While researching my opus magnus series on the history of the Club’s Junior Program, I noted that from 1947 to probably 1961, FBYC awarded a Junior perpetual trophy titled the “Henry Hutcheson Junior Trophy” that was an offspring of the Henry E. Hutcheson, Jr. Memorial Trophy that we still award today. However, the strictly junior version seems to have been lost to the sands of time and, in fact, our yearbooks do not record its winners. Let’s set the record straight.

The last description of the deed and list of award winners was found in the 1962 FBYC Yearbook as follows:

Henry Hutcheson Junior Trophy
(Presented by the Junior Seamen in 1947)

Awarded annually to the outstanding member of the Junior Seamanship classes (see the February 2006 LOG) based on interest in sailing, sportsmanship and achievement. The standing in competitive sailing events shall also be considered but this shall not be controlling. The candidate must not have attained his or her fourteenth birthday prior to June 1 of the year in which the trophy is awarded and must have had satisfactory attendance in the Junior Seamanship classes.

Awards:
1947 R. A. Stevenson
1948 J. W. Hudson
1951 A. John Ochsner III
1952 Anne Keck
1953 Mary Reid Dunn
1955 Clare Meade Gibson
1956 Perry Sinnickson
1957 Randolph T. Roper & John M. Moseley
1958 John M. Moseley
1959 Terry Hyde
1961 Elizabeth Harrison

A review of some old, musty LOGs revealed only a passing mention of the trophy as not being awarded at the 1967 Annual Meeting. I suppose that the Hutcheson Junior Trophy was supplanted by the Junior-designated Roberts Bowl first awarded in 1962, but I could not find any record of the Hutcheson Junior Trophy being permanently retired. Perhaps it still exists and is awaiting its resurrection. In any event, should we not restore this trophy and its winners to our yearbook with a footnote that the trophy has been lost?

Library News: Concurrently with the installation of the bookcase in our Club’s new library, I was delighted to find on our doorstep a book titled A Sailor’s Notebook by Richard Ullian with the following note of gratitude attached:

Nov. 19 Hello Fishing Bay Y.C.!

Here is a small thank-you for your excellent hospitality which was most appreciated after 2 chilly days on the Bay in our open cockpit Nassau 34’ cutter “Moonshine.”

We had the pleasure of meeting Dick Ullian on Cape Cod earlier in our trip south. In his late 70’s, he’s a sailor’s sailor, but this book is easy for all levels of interest, ability & age. We recommend it highly for family or sail-book-club reading. Please share with you members & enjoy. We will be back!

Jody & David Williams Home Club – Cottage Park Y.C., Winthrop MA (near Boston)

Your Historian and Librarian concurs with their review of Ullian’s book after a thorough reading. Check it out in the library.

Time-Marches-On Department: It is always sad when long term members find they must resign from the Club due to life changes that prevent them from enjoying our facilities but particularly sad when their experiences at FBYC have represented such a major portion of their lives. Recently we received this poignant letter from Drs. Donald & Audrey King who have been members and bond holders since the 1950s and for many, many years were virtual fixtures on their cruising boat at our docks.

Please take this letter as our resignation to no longer be a member of the FBYC as of 2006. It is with much anxiety and regret that we find it necessary to take this action. Some of our most active and happiest family years were with the club. Our friendships and memories will last forever. Our family grew up sailing and has many fond memories.

But we have moved into a retirement home and can no longer use the club. We have no family in Richmond. Our health is limited by my age of 84 and my wife of 80. We regret the loss of our many friendships and the pleasant times we enjoyed with the club. But we must resign.

Thank you for all your consideration, we are

Sincerely yours,
Donald P. King
Audrey Cox King

The Kings currently reside at Westminster Canterbury in Richmond, and I can assure them that they will always be welcome anytime they wish to visit us at FBYC in the future.
