The YMCA Sailing Camp is a learn-to-sail week sponsored by FBYC to encourage new sailors from the Middlesex community to join our sport. With a typical instructor-to-student ratio of 1-to-5, intensive training is provided to 20 kids aged 8-12, using FBYC’s OptiKids teaching approach that combines safety with fun and learning. On Thursday of the camp week, the entire class goes out on offshore boats to experience how their newfound skills extend to all sailing vessels.
Peninsula YMCA Director Rosabeth Kissman reported after a prior year’s session, “Over the week, I watched as kids flourished from beginning sailing abilities to confident navigation in shifting winds. The skill of the Fishing Bay Yacht Club instructors and patience with our youth was unparalleled. Extended thanks to our offshore captains for the week, Ted Bennett, Brad Miller, and Karen Soule, who bravely navigated our local waters with a sailboat full of Y campers! This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many of our Y kids made possible by the FBYC. I look forward to watching our sailors deepen their connection with the sport for years to come.”
