RACE COMMITTEE MARK AND SAFETY BOAT TRAINING
When: April 2 and 3, 2022
Where: Fishing Bay Yacht Club, Deltaville, Virginia
Daily Schedule: 09:00 - 16:00 each day, lunch served on screened porch at noon
Instructor: Arn Manella (US Sailing Certified Instructor Trainer)
Who Should Attend:
* Mark boat captains and crews (especially important for AOD, Stingray and Junior Regatta Volunteers)
* Adult Sailing Safety boat captains/crews (for clinics and other on water events)
* Junior parents who regularly operate spectator boats and may be in position to render assistance
* Junior instructors who need additional time in boat to pass formal Level 1 certification, or who cannot attend the formal certification course
Boats Used for on water Instruction and Practice: Parker, Wild Cat, Ribs, Becca, Small Whaler
Day 1 - Safety & General Powerboat Handling
USCG and US Sailing Powerboat Safety Requirements
* Small boat rescue techniques (capsize recovery assist, from Optis to Flying Scots
* Towing single or strings of small boaats
* Essential power boat safety and handling skills/procedures (tested in Level 1 Instructors course), includes high-speed stops, docking & departures, positioning for teaching, recovering MOBs
Day 2 - Mark Boat Topics
* Accurately and efficiently setting/retrieving drop marks as directed by RC Signal Boat (starting pin, windward, leeward, offset, leeward gates)
* Course change (flags and signals for mark change due to wind shift or shortening course)
* Finishing boats on shortened courses
* Taking and reporting wind speed and direction to RC Signal boat
What to Bring
PFD, water bottle, closed toed shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, wind jacket
NO COTTON SHIRTS!!! FOR ON-WATER ACTIVITIES
