#134 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

Lin Mccarthy on Monday January 13, 2003 10:58AM

Key West Bound:  As of last week entry numbers for Key West Race Week hovered around 200.  There will undoubtedly be more.  The event runs January 20-24, 2003.  So far the southern Bay contingent includes three J/29s, Paul Andersen's Titillation, Case Whittemore's Patriot, and Sam Marshall's Night Music.  Also, sailing from Virginia are Brad Worsham's J/109, Orion, and Othmar von Blumencron's Dame Blanche , a Beneteau First 40.7.

FOR EVERYBODY - THE SOIREE AT FISHING BAY - THIS SATURDAY, JANUARY 18:  CBYRA Region 4 High Point Awards will be presented along with special awards.  Region 4 (that's all of us) One Design, Offshore, and Junior racers will be recognized for their accomplishments during the 2002 season. Fishing Bay Yacht Club is hosting this event,so, if you have not yet visited their new facility, there is no better time.  Good food, good drink, good friends - all in one place!  Festivities begin at 5:30 pm social (beer, wine, and soft drinks provided - BYOB is permissible for adults); dinner will be served at 6:30 pm with the awards presentation to follow.  Cost is $15 per person (or less). Please let Tom Roberts know you plan to attend (call Tom at (804) 843-2682  or email him at   mobjack@crosslink.net)  Open to all southern Chesapeake Bay sailors and their friends and families. You do not have to be an award recipient to enjoy this special evening!

Calendar Candy:  There they are on the cover, front and center, and as the October 2003 page - former area One Design 35s Avalanche (Sledd Shelhorse) and Widowmaker (Nick and Tina Worth).  It's a starting line shot of the class at Key West Race Week in Onne van der Wal's  2003 panoramic color calendar, "Boats and Beautiful Places".  Call (401) 849-5556 to order one.

CCV officials announce that world class racer Steve Hunt will conduct the CCV RACING RULES CLINIC - APRIL 1.  Steve and his teammate Michael Miller are in the  #1  470 spot on the US Sailing Team and strong contenders for the Olympics in 2004. The CCV Racing Rules Clinic is an annual happening, FREE, and open to all.  It is also the distribution site for the CCV 2003 Racing Guide.  The Mariners Museum (Newport News, Virginia) will host the event.

CBYRA President Bob Rutsch will be on hand at the Region 4 awards presentation/dinner at FBYC this Saturday.  Good chance to say "hello".  (Please see above event info - first item of this issue of SBRNYCU.)

PHRF Applications for 2003 Ratings (Renewals/Updates) have hit mailboxes in the southern Bay.  If you have not received yours, contact PHRF right away.  And, be aware, there are changes in the form, especially regarding spinnaker info (asymmetrical-symmetrical, Code 0, etc.).  Since you must have a valid 2003 rating to compete in a sanctioned race, the time is now to complete the form and stroke the check.  Remember, as you make decisions effecting ratings credits (roller furler, folding props, chutes, etc.), once you claim a credit, you must sail your boat in that configuration.  If your rating includes a credit for roller furling, for instance, you must race your boat with a roller furler - unless and until you apply for and receive from PHRF an officially changed valid rating.  Not race committees, not club commodores, not even your mother herself can change your rating - only PHRF.

There is hope for Spring - 6 Lasers seen sailing off Strawberry Banks on Saturday.

Dues are due: Before you consider those post holidays plastic payments, plan your set asides for 2003 racing related dues:  CCV, PHRF, CBYRA, and US SAILING renewal forms will be hitting your mailbox soon.

CCV Racing Flyers (NORs) for 2003 CCV Racing Guide: CCV commodore Dave Bouchard is soliciting clubs' race flyers for the 2003 season Guide now.  A mailing regarding the change in the Guide's starting system (CCV will use the RRS 26 system) and prices information should be out soon.  Questions? Contact: Dave Bouchard at (757) 484-8388 or John McCarthy, Vice Commodore (Racing) at (757) 850-4225 or (757) 444-7557.

Success breeds more - word has it that one design classes are having a grand time at regattas hosted in the southern Chesapeake.  As a result, the same word has it that the 2004 J/29 North American Championship is a strong possibility for our area (Hampton Yacht Club as likely host).

Another America's Cup Innovation - sunglasses with wind readouts!  Team Oracle is using these dandy sunglasses already.  It's like the stuff you see US fighter pilots using in their helmets.  Formula One race car drivers have tried similar arrangements on their helmets too.  So, now you can see wind readings and boat performance info without having to squint at mast mounted instruments or your super hi-tech Dick Tracy wrist decoder.  It's called the BMW Wireless Microdisplay System.

On the Hard:  Boat yards are busy hauling the post holiday race boat rush.  Yard denizens report the following:  Snuggled up at Cobbs in Norfolk are Cyrano (Bob Mosby), Scherherazade (Sledd Shelhorse), and Kahuna (Sanford Richardson).  Doing time at Norfolk Boat Works (Norfolk) are About Time (Bob Archer) and Virginia H (Andy Armstrong). Orion (Pat Patterson) is bundled against the cold at Bluewater Yachting Center (Hampton).  And, Yankee Point Sailboat Marina has well over 200 boats pulled already with space going fast.  Remember the racers' motto: early in, early out - get in the front line every time!

2003 Scheduling:  CBYRA Region 4 Scheduler Martin Holland reports the "big boat" schedule is in the final stage.  Club/event reps who owe Martin info, please contact him at (757) 726-2267 or bayracer@cox.net

MURPHY'S LAW:  I'm all for those new BMW shades.  I'll have mine programmed to show my favorite Purina commercial or maybe just a steak sizzling on the skipper's grill attached to the stern pulpit. Living to race, racing to live. /s/Murphy the Racing Beagle
