Southern Bay "Youngsters" Out There Racing: Chris Behm (Hampton Roads Academy/Hampton)  finished 6th in the Bemis Nationals and 2nd in 420 North Americans in Canada.  William Bomar, who sails with his dad, Alan Bomar, on their J/24, roundabout,  struck out on his own and won an inaugural Optimist regatta held at Two Rivers Yacht Club (Governors Land/Willliamsburg) this past weekend.  Two Rivers YC hosted their first Summer Junior Program, which was administered by Premier Sailing of Irvington (Phil and Arabella Denvir, owners).

September 11, 2001.  This Thursday will mark the second anniversary of that horrific event.  Since then most racers sail with a more intense appreciation of the freedom that characterizes our sport.  Sail on!  Race on!

DINK VAIL REGATTA - THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13. Hosted by Norfolk Yacht & Country Club.  Racing in the Hampton Roads harbor area.  CBYRA sanctioned racing for all PHRF fleets;  non-sanctioned for Cruising classes.  Post race awards, T-shirts, social and buffet dinner.  For boats that want to stay over Friday or Saturday night, NY&CC can accommodate you in vacant slips, dockside rafting, or nearby anchorage  (contact dock master at (757) 286-1752).  For info contact Bill Wheary at (757) 423-2820.  For planning purposes, NYCC asks that entries be submitted by noon, Wednesday, September 10.  Mandatory skippers meeting for Cruising class is Thursday, September 11 at 7:30pm, NYCC.

Weeks Wins Hanbury Cup.  Scherherazade, Callinectes, and No Problem Win Their Fleets at Executive Cup.  Cheryl Lea, Ben Weeks J/29, made an appearance on the race course this past Saturday and hit the water movin'.  Cheryl Lea trashed all comers in PHRF B and, in so doing, won the Euclid Hanbury Cup by having the largest margin over the second place boat in her fleet.  RESULTS:  PHRF A: 1. Scherherazade, Taylor 40, Sledd Shelhorse; 2. Mirage, Hobie 33, Christian Schaumloffel; 3. Kahuna, Farr 395, Sanford Richardson.  PHRF B.  1. Cheryl Lea, J/29, Ben Weeks; 2. Cool Change, J/30, Rusty Burshell; 3. Independence, Islander 36, Graham Field. PHRF C:  1. Callinectes, Cal 30-3, Ben Cuker; 2. Incentive, O'Day 27, Louie Lewis; 3. Beowulf, Seidelmann 29, Bob Old.  PHRF Non-Spin:  1. No Problem, Pearson 26, Ed Andrews; 2. Lively Lady, Tartan 30, Dave Lively;  3. Midnight Mistress, C&C 35, Jake Brodersen.  PRO: Dick Boykin.  Proceeds from this race benefit the CNU sailing team through the Christopher Newport Sailing Foundation.

The Serio Regatta  (September 13th),  named for the founder of the Hampton One Design, is hosted by Hampton Yacht Club.  If you have an HOD or want to crew on one, contact Leigh Morgan at (757) 726-9640.  Also, she's the one to speak to about the regatta as well as housing, etc.

Tyler Moore Wins 5o5 North Americans: The International 5o5 North American Championships were held in Falmouth, Massachusetts, week before last.   Tyler Moore (Hampton), along with teammate Peter Alarie (Bristol, RI) finished at the top of the heap with finishes of 1-2-1-2-1-1-1-dns. Henry Amthor and crew Steve Sparkman and Tom Hurwitch  finished 7th overall among 33 world class competitors.  Clayton James (Ware River) sailed with Neal Fowler (Hyannis) and finished 11th. Kudos to all!

No Name J/30 and Stardancer  Victorious in One Design Fleets at ARW:  Dave McConaughy's J/30, #090, won the 15 boat J/30 one design fleet at Annapolis Race Week over the Labor Day weekend.  The J/30's got in 6 races and McConaughy and crew made every race count, winning the fleet by one point (5-3-3-1-2-2) over Dorsey Owens' Sea Biscuit.   Meanwhile, on the Pearson 30 course, John Blais and the Stardancer crew had to face the last day with all the marbles riding on Monday's outcome. Stardancer was 3rd after two races on Saturday, and the fleet did not get in any races on Sunday.  They did what they had to do - won the only race Monday and the top spot in the 7 boat fleet (2-2-1), also by a single point. John Hanna's Battlewagon (Pearson 37) sailed in the 16 boat PHRF A2 fleet and finished 7th after losing to the time limit on Sunday (only 2 in the fleet beat the clock) and a tough single race on Monday (4-6-TLE/4)-11).

Don Landau, the Ouantum guy in Fishing Bay/Deltaville, manages Walter Kennedy's (Charlotte,NC)  Henderson 30, Savannah,  and he took her up to the Larchmont (NY) NOOD this past weekend where she  finished 2nd in her fleet (2-2-3-1-4).

Two area intercollegiate sailing teams had boats competing in this past weekend's Executive Cup Race.  Hampton University raced Synergy in PHRF C , and Old Dominion University sailors entered Blade Runner in PHRF B.

The Mariners'  Museum's Maritime Moments Series focuses on "The Father of Our Navy", John Paul Jones, on Tuesday, September 23 (2:30 pm).  TMM does a great job with these presentations - light, just the right length, and informative presentations.

Dink Vail, for whom this coming weekend's  regatta is named, was a well known, long time racer on the southern Chesapeake Bay.  His racing accomplishments are recognized and chronicled in the Virginia Sportsmen's Hall of Fame in Portsmouth (High Street).

John Dodge, CBYRA Executive Committee official and former region 4 VP, sends word that he sailed Labor Day weekend in the prestigious 238 mile Vineyard Race (Donneybrook).  The Annapolis based black hull was doing great, until at Vineyard Light their tuff luff failed and they were forced to retire.

Latest word heard is that two southern Bay J/30's will be racing in the J/30 Class North American Championships this coming weekend in Annapolis. Dave McConaughy's #090 (already in A-town) will be joined by Rusty Burshell's Cool Change, both sailing out of HYC.  The event will be hosted by Eastport Yacht Club; racing begins Friday, the 12th, and goes through Sunday.

To be on the Turkey Shoot Hospice Regatta T-shirt your boat must be registered no later than next Monday, September 15th.  To download a registration form go to   www.yankeepointmarina.com    The event is October 10-12, 2003.

Dinghy One Design Dock Talk:   Maybe, just maybe, the 2004 5o5 Mid-Atlantics will come to Hampton Roads and maybe, just maybe, the 2004 Mobjack Nationals will come to Fishing Bay.

Tack!  Don't tack!  Avoid arguments/debates in the cockpit. This coming weekend there are two opportunities for "big boat" racers to go it alone.  On Saturday, Sep 13, Yankee Point Yacht Club sponsors their Single Handed Race.  On Sunday, Sep 14th, Hampton Yacht Club hosts their annual Singlehand Race (contact:  Kathy Brady 757-723-3244).

Bluewater UpdateLarry Cohen's Swan 411, Dawn Treader, has won the Stamford Yacht Club's Northern Ocean Racing Trophy.  The trophy is awarded based on combined finishes in the Pineapple Cup, Hemingway Ocean Race, Annapolis-Newport, Marblehead, Halifax Race, the Storm Trysail Block Island Race, Around Long Island Race and SYC's Vineyard Race.

MURPHY'S LAW:  I've been dissed. Spent the weekend evenings watching the opening games of the pro football season.  There are rams, dolphins, ravens, bears, bengals, panthers, cardinals, seahawks, eagles, buffalos... ooops, that's the city.  Well, you get the idea - not one dog!  What about the Hampton Roads Racing Beagles? Or, the Rappahannock Racing Beagles?  With a name already picked out, it should be easy to get a team.  Living to race, racing to live.  /s/Murphy the Racing Beagle
