onIMPORTANT RACING
DATES: 2004 is Leap Year (you remember , "February has 28 [days]
and sometimes 29...") Those who have been tussling with 2004 racing
schedules are well aware of the "leaping" required in plans for the coming
season. Here are 7 critical southern Bay dates that are for
the most part settled: (1) CCV Spring Series #1,
Sunday, April 25 (important to your boat yard splash date); (2) FBYC
Spring Series Opening Day is set for Saturday, April 24;
(3) Still officially tentative status, but looking
fairly solid is June 4-5-6 for the 2004 Black Seal Cup/Southern Bay Race
Week; (4) TowneBank HomeTowne Regatta which
coincides with Norfolk's Harborfest is set for June 12 (Portsmouth Boat Club
sponsored - race is CBYRA sanctioned in 2004); (5) 2004 Cock
Island Race is confirmed at June 25-26 (sponsored by PortsEvents, 757-
393-9933); (6) 2004 Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge is all
set for Sunday, July 18- Tuesday, July 20; (7) Stringray Point
Regatta is set for September 4-5 (sponsored by
FBYC).
J29 2004 NA
Championship coming to Hampton Roads: The J29 North American Championships
will be held in Hampton Roads in 2004. Hampton
Yacht Club is on tap to host the event tentatively set for October 15, 16, and
17, 2004. Stay tuned.
MEDIA STARS -
QUICKY IN THE CENTERFOLD (almost) of the December issue
of Sailing World Magazine. Check out Mike Veraldi and crew on
Quicky on pages 34 and 35 in the article on the J/24 25th
anniversary regatta. On page 37 photo, the guys on starboard have a
hometown flavor too - could it be...?
Old Dominion
University's Anna Tunnicliffe recently won the ICSA/Vanguard North
American Women's Single-handed Championship.
There was too much snow in some
places, so the CBYRA Annual Meeting scheduled for this past
Saturday, was POSTPONED until this coming Saturday, December 13, 2003, at
Tred Avon YC, Oxford, MD. Registration is at 9 AM and meeting begins at
9:30 AM sharp. For info contact Amy Chalmers at the CBYRA
office (410) 269-1194. Southern Bay (Region 4) members may contact Lin
McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.
REMINDER
#1: Do NOT put away your fur lined foulies yet! 2004 NEW
YEAR'S MADNESS RACE is all set for January 1st. This
year Old Point Comfort Yacht Club will handle both the pre-race skippers
meeting (OPCYC clubhouse, Bldg 183) and the post-race party and awards
(restaurant over the OPC Marina - next door to the OPCYC clubhouse). The
start will be moved from its usual spot at the HYC docks because of the HYC dock
replacement project. The start and the finish will be off the OPC
Marina docks. For detailed info, please contact Jeff Rogers at
449-2931 or Bob Williamson at email sunlion@visi.net.
REMINDER #2:
SEAFORD YACHT CLUB NEW YEAR'S DAY RACE is on! This race goes
waaaaaaaay back - it is somewhere near the middle of its 3rd decade, according
to Bay lore. The first start is scheduled for high noon. Call to let
them know you plan to enter and to understand the "informal" traditions of the
gathering. Carl Early is the point of contact; call Carl at (757)
890-2743. (NOTE: updated telephone number)
2004 PHRF FLEET
SPLITS: It's official, splits for the PHRF fleets in the southern
Chesapeake for the coming year remain the same as they were in 2003.
PHRF splits in our region for the coming year are: PHRF A - Up
to 109; B - 110-160; C - 161 - and above. For additional
info, contact our region PHRF vp, Randy Pugh at (757)
301-2859.
Chauncey Wu and Steve
Bardwell part of IMS Mid Atlantic Championship team:
Dame Blanche, skipper/owner Othmar von Blumencron sails her out of
Annapolis, had two southern Bay crew members, Steve Bardwell and Chauncey
Wu, aboard when she won the IMS-2 class as well as overall honors at the
IMS Mid-Atlantic Championship Regatta sponsored by Storm Trysail Club in
Annapolis in November.
Organizers of Major Racing
Events - The deadline for getting event flyers or NORs
to CBYRA for publication in the 2004
Greenbook, which serves the northern Bay racers, is
January 9th. For information contact CBYRA at
(410) 269-1194. This is a good publicity vehicle for large events
that seek to encourage participation among racers who are likely to
travel from the upper Bay (beyond the Potomac). NOTE:
Flyers/NORs for the 2004 CCV Racing Guide will be due in late February
- more details on that in a future SBRNYCU.
Know Anyone Who Wants To Work in a Junior Sailing
Program This Coming Summer? Now is the time for junior program
instructors, directors, etc. to make contact with the club or sailing
association at which they want to work. Holiday break is the perfect
time to begin this particular job search (May and June, after college and high
school are out, is usually too late!)
Are you just a bit late packing for your trip
to join the crew for the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race? It begins
December 26th! The Sydney Hobart enjoys the reputation of having the
largest fleet in the world to start a Category 1 Ocean Race. Crossing Bass
Strait is usually a special challenge in this race.
MURPHY'S LAW: Even if
I were an Aussie Beagle, I think I'd stay snug at home on
December 26th. Why have anything to do with a body of water named
for a big, old fish?! Bass anything - good luck to ya!
Living to race, racing to live. /s/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle
