#181 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday December 29, 2003 10:09AM
onUS SAILING will no longer offer a subscription
to Sailing World Magazine as a part of the USSA
membership package. So, word is that if you extend your US SAILING
membership right away (DEADLINE is DECEMBER 31, as in this
WEDNESDAY), you can get the magazine free until your US SAILING membership
expires. So, you need to call US SAILING right now at
1-800-877-2451, if you want to beat what amounts to loss of a benefit,
i.e. the magazine for free. Thanks to CBYRA for calling attention to
this happening. A lot of CBYRA members wait until the CBYRA-USSA combo
membership deal comes available in early spring, but if you wait for that now,
you lose the advantage of getting the free mag through the extension of your
USSA membership. Remember, every penny you save can go toward a good
cause... like buying that super light, super strong, hull
slicking gronification device that guarantees you'll go
.000004 knots faster!
Do NOT put away your fur
lined foulies yet! 2004 NEW YEAR'S MADNESS RACE is just around
the corner. This is a great New Year's Day event. This year Old
Point Comfort Yacht Club will handle both the pre-race skippers meeting
(OPCYC clubhouse, Bldg 183) and the post-race party and awards (restaurant over
the OPC Marina - next door to the OPCYC clubhouse). The start will be
moved from its usual spot at the HYC docks because of the HYC dock replacement
project. The start and the finish will be off the OPC Marina
docks. For detailed info, please contact Jeff Rogers at
449-2931.
SEAFORD YACHT CLUB NEW
YEAR'S DAY RACE is on! This race goes waaaaaaaay back - it is
somewhere near the middle of its 3rd decade, according to Bay lore. The
first start is scheduled for high noon. Call to let them know you plan to
enter and to understand the "informal" traditions of the gathering. Carl
Early is the point of contact; call Carl at (757)
890-2743.
PHRF Fleets Building for
2004: Word is that the
Check Six team (John Scott/Brian
Deibler) intends to be on the starting line for CCV Spring
Series (April 25), sailing for the season out of Hampton
YC. The Nelson/Marek 30 will be racing full bore in
PHRF A.
Important notice to the LASER
NATION: Ted Morgan (Annapolis) is coordinating for Laser
District 11 information regarding the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta
(January 27 thru Jan 30, 2004). Let's see... Laser sailing in
Miami in January - what's not to like? Contact Ted at laserfleet10@yahoo.com
If you plan to do winter
racing/sailing, it is not a bad idea to confirm with your
insurance company that you are covered. If the
temperatures keep going down, you may need the "icebreaker rider" for your
policy.
No Azalea Festival
Regatta this year (2004). Regatta officials indicate the event
has been hit by lack of resources, financial and human, as well as
insurmountable logistic problems. National security measures make access
to the Norfolk Naval Base extremely difficult and many of the folks
who help run the regatta are busy defending our nation first hand.
Just in time for the J/29 North
Americans (coming to the southern Bay - Hampton - in October 2004)
comes an article in the January 2004 issue of Sailing
about the joys of retrofitting a J/29. Ask Ben
Weeks (Cheryl Lea), Paul Andersen
(Titillation), or Case Whittemore
(Patriot) what they think. See page
58. Also, the subject of the same retrofitting article is a Pearson
26. Ed Anderson, his Pearson 26 is No
Problem, probably has an opinion on what the magazine says.
The first NOOD Regatta
is set for February 13-15 in St Petersburg, FL , at SPYC. No NOOD anywhere
in January. (NOOD, pronounced nude, stands for National OffShore
One-Design.)
Newport Bermuda Race

MURPHY'S LAW: Given
the predictions for frigid temperatures, it is easy to see why racers are about
to have a "NOOD-less" January! Hope there is enough Polartec to go
around. Living to race, racing to live. /s/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle
