to actually sailing, socializing with others of the sailing persuasion is
one of the best things we do!
The "Gotta Have" Regatta Bag:
Screwpile Challenge organizers have come up with a nice incentive to
register early, really early, for the 2004 event (July 18 -
20). Submit your entry form and fees on or before February
29th, and you'll get the official regatta bag with skipper's name and boat
name embroidered under the regatta logo. There are
10 boats already registered for the 2004 Screwpile Challenge.
Get entry forms and check out Screwpile info at www.screwpile.com
Boat Yard
Birds: Part of getting ready to race involves the boat yard
visit. A number of the southern Chesapeake Bay fleet already are perched
in the yards, ready to receive TLC. Here's the down and dirty, actually up
and dry, skinny. Jim Williams' Checks in the
Mail is guarding the entrance to Cobbs in Norfolk. Also there is
Scherherazade (Sledd Shelhorse) and a still out of the
water (for a number of years now) Chesapeake. And, at Norfolk
Boat Works, About Time (Bob Archer) and Slowdance (Buk
Lawrence). Meanwhile, across Hampton Roads harbor gathered at the
Bluewater Yachting Center yard are Cheryl Lea (Ben
Weeks), Bumps and Dave Eberwine's Sea Star,
Roy Tate's Sunrise, and Richard
Payne's Miss Anne Thrope. Over on the Peninsula,
Mike Austin's Movin' On inhabits the slip beside the
lift ramp at Wormley Creek Marina while 5 others
form the jack stand brigade. High and dry looking over Wormley
Creek are Cool Change (Rusty Burshell),
Strega (Neal Garrett), Nuance (Jim Bordeaux),
Calamity (Roger Worthen) and Excelsior
(Steve Ritz).
ATLANTIC SAIL EXPO,
January 15-18, at Atlantic City Convention Center. Call
800-817-SAIL for info seminar schedules, and show info.
Up the [James] River without a race?
John Wandling (Rebecca J), who now lives at Gatling
Pointe (Smithfield), would like to hear from skippers in that area whose
competitive juices are drying because of a dearth of "big" boat
racing in the area above the James River Bridge (Pagan River - James
River). John and some friends have put together a group called the
White Shoal Sailing Club and hope to remedy the localized symptoms of
racelessitis. Contact John Wandling at (757)
357-9799.
CCV Officers and Board will meet
tonight to plan for the 2004 season. Input from racers has been
solicited. You can email your comments to ccv@ccvracing.org or go directly to a Board
member. Keep in mind, rating issues and rating certificate policy concerns
and comments should go to your PHRF delegate and/or handicapper (not CCV).
Check your 2003 CCV Racing Guide for a copy of the General Sailing
Instructions and/or the CCV (specific) Race Instructions.
But, have you seen the schooner Virginia
lately? Among others, more than 1,500 school kids have visited
her, touched her, and learned about her. 600 more youngsters from the
Chesapeake school system are set for a special visit in February. Word is
the craftsmanship going into Virginia is absolutely beautiful.
Now, is the time - go see our schooner. Regular visiting hours are
every Saturday, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
York River Yacht Club initiated their
Annual New Year's Day Race event on January 1, 2004.
Top 3 finishers were: 1. Steve Bowen, Dream On,
S2 7.9; 2. Jim Bordeaux, Nuance, Ranger
30; 3. Mike Mastracci, Four Seasons,
J/30.
Join Up Time is here: Watch for next
week's SBRNYCU (issue #184) for listing and capsule
explanation of organizations/sub-groups the function of which racers need
to understand - i.e. CCV, CBYRA, PHRF, COD, OD and US
SAILING.
MURPHY'S LAW: It's
easy to identify racers headed for Key West Race Week. They're the
ones wearing boat shoes instead of mukluks and sailing gloves instead of
mittens. And, oh yeah, BIG smiles! Living to race, racing to
live. /s/ Murphy the Racing Beagle
