Monday March 1, 2004 10:55AM
onIt is MARCH! There
are pre-season things ya gotta do! (1) Tend to your
alphabet paperwork, i.e. apply for your PHRF rating (new or
renewal); join CBYRA and join CCV (ya gotta be a member of each to compete
for their annual High Point awards); join US SAILING 'cause it's the
right thing to do. (2) Find or order from your sailmaker your
set of class flags. (3) Dig out your foulies, burn your
socks, and make the final payments to the boat yard, the sailmaker, and
the insurance guy.
One last reminder, the USSAILING Advanced Race
Management Seminar is this coming weekend ' hosted by Hampton Yacht
Club - contact Bob Thomas at (757) 898-9407 or (757) 864-3913 for
info. Also, this weekend, NORTH U Racing Tactics Seminar

And, CCV - HYC Annual Race Management Workshop
is set for 9:30 am, Saturday, March 27 at Hampton Yacht
Club. Participants will receive the 2004 seminar
Race Management Handbook along with various presenters'
handouts. Bring your Racing Rules of Sailing with you - there

If you have a hankering to leave the Bay for Memorial Day
Weekend, think about this - the North Carolina Yacht Racing Association
Championships will be May 29-30 in Beaufort, NC. In addition
to spinnaker classes, event organizers offer Non-spinnaker as well as
Cruising classes with a separate triangle course (common windward mark).
There is no racing on Monday, May 31, which is the actual, official
holiday. So, you can be back in time for Black Seal Cup-Southern
Bay Race Week in Hampton Roads the following weekend, June
4-5-6.
Last Tuesday morning, around 8:30, Steve
Bardwell, 42, died as his car crashed into a cement roadside sign
near Annapolis. He was alone in the car. A witness administered CPR,
and paramedics treated him at the scene, but Steve was pronounced dead at a
medical center. Police suspect he experienced a medical emergency
that caused the car to crash. "Bardo", as most of us knew him, had many,
many racing friends, and he was well known and well liked around the southern
Chesapeake Bay racing scene. He was a treasured member of a number of
crews during his time with us. Gone too soon and too
suddenly.
Old Dominion University sailors were well
represented at the recently finished Olympic Trials. Anna
Tunnicliffe (finished 4th in the Europes), Sally
Barkow and Debbie Capozzi (along with Carrie Howe)
were 3rd in Ynglings.
Learn to Sail Opportunity! The
Hampton Roads Community Sailing Center has established a
location at the downtown Hampton Public Piers which will be fully operational in
early spring. HRCSC offers both Adult and Youth Sailing
Programs along with an Adaptive Program. The Adult Program
starts in the spring and runs through the fall; the Youth Program runs during
the summer only. For information, call (757) 651-4273 or go to the HRCSC
web site at www.sailhamptonroads.com
Pass this info along to your neighbor, who stands and shuffles his feet in the
driveway, glancing longingly over at you as you "head out for the boat and the
water" every weekend!
A Magnificent Seven spent their entire
weekend taking the USSAILING Powerboat Instructor Training Course that
prepares participants to instruct others on operating small boats as
part of regatta support (i.e. safety boats, etc.). Among those
participants were Buddy DeRyder, Malcolm
Brady, Carolyn Grant, and Emory
Morgan. Once they had finished on the water training, they
retired Sunday afternoon to take a lengthy written exam. Kudos to
all of the participants, organizers, and the US SAILING instructors for
their time and efforts.
2004 CCV Racing Guide is almost
ready. CCV Board members completed final assembly of the CCV Guide
this past weekend. All is on track for initial distribution at
the CCV Racing Rules Seminar, April 6, at the Mariners' Museum (Newport
News, Virginia). Well known international racer and clinician
Tucker Thompson will be on hand to talk tactics, rules, and
strategies with racers and friends. The Seminar is FREE and OPEN TO
ALL. For info contact: John McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.
Traditionally March is the Month of the Spring
Winds - "...comes in like a lion, goes out like a lamb...." etc.
Good time to practice up on your knowledge of wind force levels
(Beaufort Scale). In MPH: Force 1 = 1-3;
Force 2 = 4-7 mph; Force 3 = 8-12 mph; Force 4 = 13-18
mph; Force 5 = 19-24 mph; Force 6 = 25-31; Force 7 = 32 -
38; Force 8 = 39-46; Force 9 = 47-54; Force 10 = 55-63;
Force 11 = 64-73; Force 12 =
74-82.

MURPHY'S
LAW: Racers have a special scale based [kind of] on the
Beaufort Scale. Beaufort 1-2 = WHINE Level (Aw man, I coulda been cutting
the grass!); Beaufort 3-4-5 = EL PRIMO Level (Let's stay out all
day!); Beaufort 6-7 = ADVIL Level ('Cause I'll Need it in the
Morning!); Beaufort 8 = YIKES! (Where did this come from?!);
and, Beaufort 9-12 = FAGETABOUTIT! (Let's hang out in the
bar!) Living to race, racing to live. /s/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle
