# 191 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday March 8, 2004 06:20PM
onSpotted on the southern Bay yesterday: a plethora of collegiate racers
in the mouth of the Lafayette River, a gaggle of Lasers off Hampton Bar,
and a scattering of "big" boats all along the southern Bay shores
trolling for wind and testing gear and sails . Kudos to the Early Birds
- they'll likely get more than a worm!
DILYSI going to Marblehead, MA: Joe Femino's DILYSI (Drive It Like
You Stole It), which he sailed in PHRF A, will be leaving the southern
Chesapeake. A sailor from Joe's hometown area will be taking her up
that way soon.
Also getting ready this weekend for the coming season were area racers
attending the North U. Racing Tactics Seminar hosted at Old Dominion
University's Sailing Center. Geoff Moore (Ontario and Newport, Rhode
Island) led the seminar for North U director Bill Gladstone. Kathleen
Clancy-Cooper did the organizing, and North Sails Hampton served as
liaison.
Gremellyn rejoining the fray: Greg and Lynda Cutter's C&C XL30,
Gremellyn, will be back on the race course for the entire 2004 season.
Greg's and Lynda's duties and travel with the ODU Oceanography
Department limited their racing schedule last year.
Holy Screwpile, Batman! More than 10 times last year's pace. As of
this time last year, there were 4 applications for the 2003 Screwpile
Lighthouse Challenge Regatta. As of last week, there are 45 boats
already registered for the 2004 regatta... and, the entry form mailing
will not even be going out until mid-March. So, the sooner you get
registered, the better. Screwpile, July 18-19-20, 2004, it's gonna be a
happening! www.screwpile.com <http://www.screwpile.com>
The USSAILING Advanced Race Management Seminar, hosted by Hampton Yacht
Club, concluded Sunday afternoon. Mark Murphy, Area C Race Officer,
presented the seminar and guided the participants through the extensive
and detailed curriculum. Wayne Bretsch was among the participants; he
attended to update his extensive certifications. Many southern Bay
racers will recognize Wayne as one of the 4 Key West Race Week PROs
recently mentioned in the current Sailing World. Bob Thomas organized
the gathering of 17 participants, the majority of which came from the
southern Bay along with two from North Carolina and one from New York.
Schedule change: Be aware that there will NOT be a Goodwill
(Industries) Regatta this season. Goodwill Industries decided to cancel
this part of their fund raising events this year. If you have a
calendar published before March 1, 2004, be sure to mark this October
event out.
505s Celebrate the BIG ONE this year: On September 11 - 12, the class
will celebrate their 505 Golden Anniversary at a special regatta on the
Seine River near Paris, at the site of the launching of the first 505.
