Newport Bermuda Race: 135 boats are entered in this special event which starts June 18th.
Pat Patterson's blue beauty, Orion (Taylor 41), was
out this weekend working up crew and equipment. What
is it about this event that draws bluewater racers? Do the words "Royal
Bermuda Yacht Club berthing reservations" sound like one of many
possible enticements?
Easter Egg Bottom Paint: A major marine
paint company has come out with a line of brightly colored bottom paint for
boats. They offer a vivid bright color antifouling pain in lavender, red,
yellow, and orange. So, now in addition to your crew shirts, racing
spinnakers must be color coordinated with your bottom paint. Hopefully,
the fleet will see much more of your spinnaker than your bottom! (The
brighter bottoms will announce who has the better diver too.)
Distance Racing in North Carolina: The
Albemarle 100, running from Colington Harbor and Kitty Hawk Bay to
the mouth of the Chowan River and back is set for a weekend in
mid-May. Frank Silver, who races Phantom (B-25)
and Sea Ya (Bavarian 44) on the southern Bay, heads the event this
year. Contact Frank by email at Frank@SilverConstructionServices.com
Be careful out there!
While you are happily engaged in working on your boat,
be mindful of the warning labels on various products. Fumes and/or fall
out from various epoxy ingredients, paints, abrasive juices, etc. can be
seriously dangerous. Don't let the dangers slip up on you.
Racers in Grand Poobah Positions: Randy
Alley, current Offshore (big boat racing) Division Commander at
Fishing Bay YC, has moved into the "Top Dog" position at Richmond's West
Marine. And, Frank Bush, previous TD at the Hampton West
Marine location has moved down to Louisiana to a regional administrator spot
with the organization. Nice to have those who do races in
crucial places!
The Virginia School of Sailing (VSS) has
received special recognition from the American Sailing Association.
Tom Landers, top honcho at VSS, said his school has been
recognized as an ASA "School of the Year" for the southeastern USA. Also,
Tom received "Instructor of the Year" honors from ASA at the Miami Boat
Show in February. For additional info on VSS check out the web site
at www.sail.school.com
