finishes 2nd and Patriot 3rd at J/29 Invitational. At
the FBYC J/29 Invitational this past weekend, Paul Andersen's
Titillation and Case Whittemore's Patriot
filled out the top three spots in the event. Racing was close on
Friday and Saturday, but Sunday never happened because of light to no air.
Hustler took home the first place trophy.
Opening Day at Fishing
Bay: FBYC Spring Series 1 & 2, Saturday, April 24 - Sunday, April
25. The warning is set for 1100; skippers meeting at 0930,
Saturday, at the FBYC flag pole. Fleet blessing, awards,
refreshments, and entertainment follow the racing. CBYRA sanctioned
races. Race chairman is Al Ailsworth.
LET THE RACING
BEGIN! CCV Spring Series Race #1, SUNDAY, April
25. The warning is set for 1100; in Hampton Roads harbor
area; traditional CCV post-race awards party on the HYC flag deck
(free dogs, keg, and soda); CBYRA sanctioned racing and CCV HIGH
POINT opening race. For info or entry contact: John McCarthy at
(757) 850-4225. Entry deadline is 1300 hours, Saturday, April
24.
CCV Racing provided two
Tune-Up races Sunday, for all comers. Looking especially good on
the starts was Greg Cutter, Gremellyn. New comer
to PHRF C (raced Non-Spin last year), Aria, Pam
Burdett, did well winning line honors in both races as did
Phil Brigg's Feather in PHRF A. In the PHRF B
group, Mike Nestor's Glory Days, chewed up the course
to finish first in the water in both races in that
fleet. The Tune-Up races are just that and corrected
times were not posted. Eighteen boats were out there getting their act
together on a made to order day.
Last Wednesday, Leonard
Peddy, celebrated his birthday by racing, as he usually does, on his
son Tom's, boat Impulse. Leonard deserves a
special kudo along with his birthday kudo 'cause Wednesday as a really yucky
evening. Also, out there were the gangs from Mirage,
Christian Schaumloffel, Callinectes, Ben
Cuker, Glory Days, Mike Nestor,
Calamity, Roger Worthen, and Vagabon-De,
Lester Knight. Off to the side, over by the bridge,
Hampton University's Synergy and Bob
Archer's About Time had a go at speed testing in their Capri
25s.
One last
reminder: If you plan to go racing in a PHRF class in a
sanctioned race (as well as some non-sanctioned events),
you must have a valid 2004 PHRF rating for your boat. If
you do not have your 2004 certificate, contact the southern Bay chief
handicapper, Rusty Burshell or check the official PHRF web site( www.phrfchesbay.com ). There
is no substitute for a valid PHRF rating. Listing in any
publication other than the PHRF Valid List just will not get it. Not CCV,
not your crew, not your club's event chairman, not the gang at the bar, and
not even your Momma can issue a valid PHRF rating.
Race Committee Boats
Ready - Might As Well, Dick Boykin's, 36 foot
sportfisher, has come home with grandson Scooter at the
helm, and even done a shake down race committee assignment (last HYC
Wednesday Night). Mr Roberts, the FBYC RC platform, is out
and about, and Salty Dog, John and Lin
McCarthy's Maine lobster boat, got a taste of "real
work", RC-ing for the CCV Tune-Up races yesterday.
Willoughby Racer - Tartan owner, Walter
Boatwright, Puff Cloud, was "hanging out" at Norfolk Boat
Works this weekend along with a gaggle of other southern Bay racers, including
Jake Brodersen, Midnight Mistress, who is hard at work
on his C&C, hoping to hit the water later this spring.
Two Wednesday Night series
open this week: BBSA's Little Creek SA Wednesday Night
racing begins this week, April 21, and so does York River YC action.
For info about the Little Creek program contact John or Mary Bergman at (757)
362-3775 and for York River contact Mike Mastracci by email at mike.mastracci@ngc.com.
From Murphy's "family",
Ron and Brenda Stankavich, comes word that Murphy, The Racing
Beagle,
passed on last week.
Brenda said, "She was my heart."
MURPHY'S LAW:
And, so Murphy is gone. She passed on last week and with her went a
piece of all our hearts. She was living proof that sweetness, beauty, and
love are not physical but, rather, things of the spirit. Murphy's thoughts
have been on these pages as a reflection of how she loved the water, the boats,
and the people who sail them. Sleep well, Murphy. You memory is on
the breeze and your spirit will remain always in our hearts. From a
racer who knew Murphy.
