onKahuna,
Cheryl Lea, Movin' On, and Checks in the
Mail romp in CCV Spring Series #1: Mother
Nature lured the fleet out with promise of a 10-15 knot southerly, let
things get underway, and smashed everyone's plans with a 90 degree shift to the
East, and winds building to the low 20s. At one point the wind at the
leeward mark was at 085, and at the same moment at the windward mark it was
165. A good first spring race test for the 37 boats (of 55
registered) on the course. RESULTS: PHRF A:
1. Sanford Richardson, Kahuna (Farr 395);
2. Sledd Shelhorse, Scherherazade (Taylor
40); 3. Dave Eberwine, Sea Star
(J/36); PHRF B: 1. Ben Weeks,
Cheryl Lea (J/29); 2. Rusty Burshell, Cool
Change (J/30); 3. Bill Chandler,
Rhumb Line (J/30); PHRF C: 1.
Mike Austin, Movin' On (Beneteau FC8;
2. Bill Peach, Surprise (Alerion 29
Express); 3. Ben Cuker, Callinectes (Cal
30-3). PHRF Non-Spin: 1. Jim Williams,
Checks-in-the-Mail (Catalina 38); 2. Ed
Andrews, No Problem (Pearson 26); 3. Tom
Peddy, Impulse (Catalina 34). PRO: John
McCarthy; Signal Boat Skipper: Dick Boykin; Mark Boat: Bill
Gibbings.
The Movin' On crew, which
included Dan Smoker (Smoke), came out of Wormley Creek
to win PHRF C in yesterday's CCV racing. As if the gang from the York
River couldn't satisfy their sailing itch with a day full of racing,
they jumped back in the Mike Austin's Beneteau FC8 and
sailed back home before the coals on the hotdog grill had cooled.
There were reports of some
"tea bag" action in yesterday's southern Bay CCV racing:
one of the boats in the PHRF C fleet dunked two crew at the same
stress-filled moment on the way downwind when a 20+ knot gust slammed
'em. No harm done; the crew stayed attached to the boat.
NEXT SUNDAY, May
2 - the beat goes on - CCV Spring Series Race #2. For info contact
John McCarthy, (757) 850-4225.
Remember: Racing crew
wanna-bees or wanna-bee betters - CCV "Learn to Crew on a Racing
Sailboat Program" begins Tuesday, May 4 and runs
every Tuesday and Wednesday evening throughout May. For info contact
Neal Garrett at (757) 727-0742.
The very popular Women's
Dinghy Sailing Clinic will run June 12 and 13 at Hampton Yacht
Club. This is a great opportunity for women of various levels of
sailing skill, to learn, refresh, and/or improve. There is some
classroom time, but the vast majority of the time is spend in the
boats on the water (the best place to learn)! The clinic is OPEN TO WOMEN WITH
BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE SAILING SKILLS; an opportunity to learn the basics
or just hone driving skills. For info contact Leigh Morgan at
(757) 726-9640. Do not wait to decide on this - the course will
fill up fast.
BBSA's Little Creek
SA opened their Wednesday Night Series last week with a record
number (17) boats on the line.
Friends of Steve
Bardwell: There will be a final celebration of Steve's life on
the Chesapeake Bay on Saturday, May 1. Steve's family will depart from
Hampton Yacht Club at 1100 aboard John Hanna's Battlewagon to
rendezvous with all other interested parties in the vicinity of CCV Mark "Z"
(tall Navy range light) at 1200. Steve's family will welcome his friends
at a reception at HYC at 1400. For additional information, please
contact Chauncey Wu at chaunceywu@hotmail.com
White Shoal Sailing
Club, in their first year , ran the 2nd race of their
spring series up on the James River on Sunday. RESULTS:
1. John Edwards, Recovery (Hunter 30); 2.
Richard Cassell, Alexis (Cal 330); and 3. John
Wandling, Rebecca J (J/27). Six boats turned out to race
non-spin in ESE winds of 10-15.
Jake Brodersen
completed the impossible by finishing a major keel
reclamation project on Midnight Mistress (C&C 33), got her
launched, and on the race course in less than a week.
Norfolk Yacht and Country
Club will begin their OPEN TO ALL Friday Night Racing
Series this Friday (April 30). It's an 8 race series.
The committee boat will be stationed at the mouth of the Lafayette River on the
Elizabeth River. Racing starts at 1830. For info contact Frank
Stewart at (757) 489-4128.
Greg Cutter has a
new pair of dangle earrings for the family boat jewelry
collection. Both of Gremellyn's
spinnaker halyards broke during
Sunday's racing leaving the Cutters with a stunning pair of shackles with
preventer balls.
The Annapolis NOOD
Regatta is this coming weekend. That's NOOD - National Offshore
One Design, not the "birthday suit" regatta like your non-sailing friends think
you are talking about!
HYC went the extra mile and brought in a huge crane Sunday
morning to launch and retrieve J/24's for the day's
action. The brand new J/24 (and other "big boats") hoist will be
ready soon.
One design
and daysailor boats under 22 feet - here's a special event for
you. Portsmouth Boat Club sponsors the Merrimac Memorial Regatta
& Family Picnic at Portsmouth City Park on Saturday May 29th.
Break out the lawn chairs and pull the tarp off the family dinghy. This
will be fun. For info contact Jack Herbert at (757)
934-6766.
Saturday, Cheryl Lea,
Ben Week's J/29, looked anything but race ready - her running
rigging and a lot of the standing rigging was strewn about the deck and dock
looking like spaghetti when the pasta chef goes berserk. Race she
did on Sunday, showing her past form by winning B Fleet.
Kudos to Bill
Rice and staff at HYC for putting together an impromptu breakfast
buffet Sunday to send well fed racers out to do racing.
