NOOD-ers in Naptown:
The Annapolis National Offshore One Design Regatta was sailed this past
weekend. Here's how southern Bay racers did in their one design
fleets: Racing in the 13 boat J/30 fleet, Dave
McConaughy's USA 90 finished 3rd with a string
of 14-3-3-1-2-1-1. The 14th in the first race was an OCS.
Dennis Hannick, Radio Flyer, suffered 2 miscues
(a DSQ and a DNF) during the three days that put him 7th among 8 boats racing
in the Tripp 26 fleet. In the 6 boat J/27 fleet,
Mike Dale's Juggernaut finished 4th. The
NOOD doubled as the J/27s North American Regatta. Rob
Walthenbaugh crewed with Mike and the
Juggernaut gang in stiff competition. The Pearson
30 fleet mustered 4 boats on the race course and Stardancer, John Blais,
finished 2nd among the four. Scott
Batchelor, finished 6th, among the 78 J/22s racing !
Alexander finished 46th in the same huge
fleet.
Yesterday was the second week for
the J/24s racing under their new PHRF rating of 171. The
boats took a 3 sec hit week before last which moved them from their old rating
of 174. The J/24 ODR (PHRF one design rating; i.e., sailing under class
configuration, etc.) is also 171.
Good Samaritans foiled: Picture this -
the CCV race committee boat was blowing horns and waving flags
while announcing a course change to boats rounding the leeward mark Sunday,
when out of nowhere came a big, double-decker cruiser, bent on taking the RC
under tow. "Wait! What do you want?" was the hail from the RC boat.
"We thought you were in trouble and we came to help," came back the
reply. (It is a comfort to know, though, that those kind
of kind folks are on the Bay.)
Congratulations to John
McCarthy for earning Regional Race Officer
certification. John joins two others from the southern Bay
who hold USSA advanced race management certifications - Joe
Hallissy (national) and Taran Teague
(regional). Congrats also to Kathy Brady for
receiving the USSA basic club level race management certification. Kathy
joins USSA certified club race officers Glenn Giles, Dick Boykin, David
Lee, Bill Mellen, Randy Pugh and Bob Thomas from the southern
Bay.
Raceboat Pedigree
Tidbits: John White, who is a well known
grassroots sailor, particularly in the northern Bay area, has moved to J/24s and
finished 14th out of 74 boat J/24 Nationals regatta held two weeks
ago in Annapolis. Here's the southern Bay connection: Before his
current J/24, John prepared and raced extremely successfully two boats
that now compete in the southern Bay fleet: Bob Archer's
Capri 25, About Time, and Dave McConaughy's J/30,
USA 090.
Rappahannock River Yacht Club Spring
Regatta: In the Rappahannock River area, racers are still on the
rebound from the massive blow struck by Hurricane Isabel last fall. A
handful made it out for the RRYC spring regatta, though, and here are the names
of the top three in the combined spinnaker class:
1. Dwight Timm, Silver
Fox; 2. Norm Smith, Flounder;
3. Anker Madsen, Stephanie.
Skipper/owner of The Hunter (Hunter 26.5),
Justin Morris, turned up AWOL Sunday. Seems Justin
suffered from a bug bite - a Lightning bug bite, that is. He was up
on the Potomac racing the family Lightning in a dinghy one-design
regatta! Justin is the CCV Board member who sees that all goes well
with arrangements for the CCV racing trophies, including the daily post-race
party silverware. Tom Peddy filled in for him this
weekend.
The hearty band of racers in the newly formed White Shoal
Sailing Club (James River) enjoyed yesterday's great sailing conditions with
winds out of the southwest cookin' at 20 knots and gusting to 26.
John Edwards, Recover, Hunter 30, won the
day.
Red Hat on
eBay: There is a listing on eBay offering a brand new Mount
Gay 2003 Annapolis Race Week 300 year hat. So, if you get it now, you
can have it appropriately faded by mid summer and be ready to look
"real" by the time you hit the prime time regattas this
season.
Buk Lawrence's beautiful blue Islander 36,
Slowdance, is moving from Hampton Creek to Willoughby where her new
owners will keep her. Slowdance was an "optical" favorite on the
lower Bay whether racing or cruising. The new owners do not plan to change
her name and indicate they do not think any other name could be
appropriate.
If you plan to visit the Rappahannock River
area of the southern Bay this season and want to do some racing while
there, the best points of contact are Rappahannock River YC race captain Tom
Norris at (804) 435-2882 and/or Yankee Point YC racing captain Dwight Timm at
(804) 462-7119.
J/22 Worlds coming to Annapolis (May 18-21):
Southern Bay homie, Steven Hunt (finished 4th in 470s
for the 2004 Olympic berth on the USA sailing team), is listed as a strong
contender in this upcoming event. Registration deadline is Friday, May
7.
Jack Herbert says sailors can obtain info
regarding the Portsmouth Boat Club Merrimac Memorial Regatta
for boats under 22 feet long (Saturday, May 29), by checking out the web site at
http://portsmouthboatclub.org/Merrimac
This is the regatta that is held at Portsmouth City Park on the river and
includes a family-style picnic.
MURPHY'S LAW: We
racers already have burned our socks. Most have shed the long poly, latex,
spandex, mildew proof, tougher than nails underwear. Next to go will be
the smelly foulies. Soon, very soon, we'll be dressed lighter than air
and as free as the birds. Hang in there! Living to
race, racing to live. Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
