#200 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday May 10, 2004 12:19PM
onAlso, having taken the Mothers Day weekend off, FBYC
resumes their 2004 Spring Series Sunday, May 16, for the "big boat"
fleet. Saturday, May 15, is when the FBYC One Design
(dinghy) fleet continues that spring series with John
Beery leading the Flying Scots, Lee Farinholt the
Front Runners, and Alain Vincey the Lasers.
CCV SPRING SERIES FINALE - Sunday, May 16 - There will
be 2 races (Spring Series Race #3 followed immediately by Race #4) - NOTE:
RACING STARTS WITH THE FIRST WARNING SCHEDULED FOR 1000 ( For those with short
term memories, that's an hour earlier than Races #1 and
#2.)
J/24 Fleet 71
racers: The new lift HYC is operational and, in fact, both
Rocket J and Roundabout have used it to launch and retrieve
for CCV Spring Series Race #2. Head for the J/24 regatta, Saturday, May
15.
Phil Briggs,
owner/skipper of Feather (PHRF A), has been named as an
honorary member of Hampton Yacht Club. Phil, well know for his dedication
to the sport of sailboat racing and to his club, was the key man in
honchoing the just completed renovation of the docks and waterfront area of
HYC.
When CCV Spring Series racing resumes this
weekend, all eyes will be on PHRF B where the competition for the Top
Spot is tightest - Rusty Burshell's Cool Change
(J/30) and Ben Week's Cheryl Lea (J29) are tied with 3
points each going into Sunday's racing. They have traded first and
second place in races #1 and #2. Meanwhile, Bill
Chandler's Rhumb Line (J/30) has a firm, but not
final, grip on third having finished in that slot in both race #1 and
#2. After 2 races in PHRF A, Sledd Shelhorse's
Scherherazade (Taylor 40) is in the catbird seat (2-1), two points
ahead of the Eberwine's Sea Star (3-2). In
PHRF C, Mike Austin's Movin' On (Beneteau FC8)
is in command with two bullets in the bank, and in PHRF Non-Spin
Jim Williams' Checks in the Mail enjoys a series
mid-point lead, also with two first place finishes. That said, no one can
forget that we are talking about sailboat racing here, and with a
two race day coming up results certainly may prove to be discombobulating to the
current standings.
Meanwhile, in the Tarheel
State, May racing heats up too. This coming Saturday, May
15-16, is the Albemarle 100. This is
a night race in the Albemarle Sound; about 87 nm distance. For
additional info contact Frank Silver by email at Frank@SilverConstructionServices.com For
Memorial Day Weekend racing, think about the NCYRA Championships (May
29-30) in Beaufort, North Carolina. Spinnaker, Non-Spin, and
Cruising fleets are offered. For info contact Guy Staat at (910)
297-8807 or check the web site at www.ncyra.org
CBYRA HIGH POINT ELIGIBILITY: First and
foremost, to qualify for the year end CBYRA High Point awards, you must be a
member of CBYRA. Join now, so that all of your sanctioned races count
toward your CBYRA High Point standing. For info, contact the CBYRA office
at (410) 269-1194 or go to the web site at www.cbyra.org
J/22 Worlds will
include some heavy hitters from the sailing world. The event begins next
week (May 17) in Annapolis and southern Bay world class racer Steven
Hunt will be racing. Also entered in this major-major event are
southern Bay racers Dave Alexander, Scott Batchelor and
Will Crump. So, look out, John Bertrand
and Rod Johnstone, the down-south homies are not
chopped liver!
Cape Henry Cup - Saturday, May 22 - sponsored
by BBSA. Here's a race from off Buckroe Beach, out beyond the Chesapeake
Bay Bridge Tunnel complex to a turning point off Cape Henry, and back. It
is the first race that counts toward BBSA's newly established Chesapeake Bay
Distance Racing Series. For info and/or entry contact: Scott
Almond at (757) 471-2663. Bring extra sandwiches and plenty of liquids
- the warning for the first class is at 0930; one boat finishing by 1700 makes
the race valid for that class.
Here come da judges!
Racing is a self-policing sport - on the water LAW and
ORDER. US SAILING recognizes those members of the sailing
community who meet the criteria to act as USSA
certified judges. On the southern Bay we have 5 USSA certified
judges and they are: Stephen Wrigley (Chesterfield), who
is the only certified senior judge and also is a certified umpire. The
four certified judges are Dave Pyron
(Hampton), who recently earned his USSA certification
for umpire, Dan Trammell
(Springfield), John McCarthy
(Hampton) and Hugh Elliott (Alexandria).
Bionics in racing
fleet: Louie Lewis and Barbara Lewis are back
together on Incentive (PHRF C).
Barb has gotten the docs'
clearance to return to racing after hip repair surgery earlier this
Spring. There is now a bionic factor on the Incentive
crew.
Here's a date for your 2005
calendar: Premiere Racing, the group that will take up
administration of the South Florida SORC event next year, has
announced that Miami Beach Race Week will be March 10-13,
2005 and will include two venues, one of which will be on Biscayne Bay,
the other in the Ocean. So far, Melges 24 and Etchells classes will be at
the Bay venue. As planning progresses other one design classes along
with PHRF and IMS fleets are expected to race. Farr 40s, Mumm 30s, J/105s,
and J/80s are invited already.

MURPHY'S
LAW: Anti-tippage tip: To conserve your racers'
brew, always place your beer can on the centerline of the boat. Follow this
guideline when you must use two hands to help roll the mainsail or some other
post-race tidying duty. Do this and you will not waste a single drop due
to tipping. Remember, it's a crime to waste good brew.

sailing spirit in us all
