ORCAS ISLAND, Wash. -- At 85, App Applegate keeps pushing the limits of living off the grid.

Out here in Puget Sound, on the upper west side of the American dream, he lives in a shack without running water, listens to National Public Radio on a hand-crank radio and avoids outhouses as ecologically incorrect. He prefers a shovel and an open …

FISHING BAY YACHT CLUB J/29 INVITATIONAL REGATTA
APRIL 16-18, 2004

Eight boats came to FBYC in Deltaville, Virginia for the sixth annual J/29 Invitational Regatta. The weather was horrible all week—cold, rainy and very windy. On Thursday, as participants were getting their boats ready, the rain finally stopped and the wind started to decrease, somewhat.

Friday dawned sunny and clear with a spring nip in the air. The wind blew 6-10 and shifty. David Lee, the PRO, and his race committee were very busy moving marks but managed to get in 4 good races. Patriot won the day with 3 bullets and a 6th. Titillation was just 1 point behind. Hustler had a spinnaker halyard jump the …

Now that spring racing has begun, and as a reminder of things every good skipper needs to know before heading out the the race course, we are reprinting the The Model Skipper Provided by Bill Gladstone, North U Director

Having Trouble Building a Winning Program? Here are Twenty One Team Building techniques we've observed.

1 - When it is time to put the jib up prior to the start on a blustery day, sail a close reach to maximize spray across the foredeck. By soaking the crew prior to the start they won't be so reluctant to get wet during the race. Do not reach off in an effort to keep the foredeck dry.

Kahuna, Cheryl Lea, Movin'  On, and Checks in the Mail romp in CCV Spring Series #1:  Mother Nature lured the fleet out with promise of  a 10-15 knot southerly, let things get underway, and smashed everyone's plans with a 90 degree shift to the East, and winds building to the low 20s.  At one point the wind at the leeward mark was at 085, and at the same moment at the windward mark it was 165.   A good first spring race test for the 37 boats (of 55 registered) on the course.  RESULTS:  PHRF A:  1. Scuttlebutt has some great photos of the recent Optimist Regatta held April 8-11, 2004 - at Lake Garda, Italy.

More than 3,000 people - competitors, parents, coaches, relatives - are in Riva del Garda for 22nd Annual International Optimist Class Meeting. Hosted by the Fraglia Vela Riva, this regatta has already been listed in past Guinness World Records. However, this year the event has reached a new record of entries: 784. Entries came from twenty-two countries, where the snow-capped mountains and the bright blue waters of Lake Garda provided the perfect backdrop for this festival of sailing.

Death by drowning

David Hazlehurst on

History
Today's early morning mail includes an article from John Potter in Annapois that references Shelley's death by drowning 186 years ago. It could be titled caught in a storm with a badly designed boat. We can still get caught in a storm, even with all the navigation aids developed over the recent past but having a life vest on, or near at hand, is a prerequisite whenever you leave the dock. It is also is required by the Laser class amongst others. Enjoy the article.

July 8, 1822: Shelley dies by drowning (from "The Guardian"):

From the earliest references to his childhood love of paper boats (often made of large denomination banknotes), to his last Faustian letters from …
