TWO NORTH CAROLINIANS TAKE TOP SPOTS at KEY WEST!!  Pete Hunter, of Kill Devil Hill,  sailing his Thompson 30, WAIRERE,  crushed his fleet and Lloyd Griffin,  of Elizabeth City, sailing his Hadley 40, CASH FLOW,  won his.  Even with a DSQ in the first race, the Wairere team came back to win the fleet by 11 points.  Wairere put together a string of  9(dsq)-3-3-1-2-2-3-1-1 and, using their throw-out for the dsq, finished with 16 points.  The second place boat amassed a total of 27 points.  Wairere sailed in the PHRF-1 fleet (8 boats), and Cash Flow sailed in the 12 boat PHRF-2 fleet.    Cash Flow  experienced a bit of a rocky first race, finishing 7th, but …

The 2006 Junior High Points standings are up and the top tiers include lots of FBYC junior racing sailors. In the Optimist Class, Madeleine Alderman swept top honors in Red Fleet and as top woman Optimist sailor in her class. She was third overall, just behind Alex Jacob who crowned the top overall spot as the best Optimist sailor on the Bay. The top ten overall positions also included Austin Powers, who took third in Blue Fleet and 10th overall. Kyle Swenson snatched 12th overall, while his sister Kendall was 24th but first in White Fleet. Ben Buhl ratcheted up the ranks with a 15th overall and 5th in the Blue fleet. Courtesy of Carolyn and Ken Schmalenbeger the club had a booth at the Richmond Boat Show January 12-14 and recruited 33 crew candidates for the coming season. While the majority were interested in racing on off-shore boats the candidates included two Juniors interested in One Design Sailing and a retired USAF Navigator from Omaha whose sailing career started in Lasers in the mid-70's who may be interested in crewing on a Flying Scot.

Dear BoatU.S. Member,

We are writing to advise you that the Virginia Legislature will soon consider a bill, House Bill 1627, Boating Safety Education, that would require all motorboat and PWC operators to take a boating safety course and carry a certificate showing successful completion of a written test.

BoatU.S. supports this legislation because we believe it will make our crowded waterways safer for everyone by helping insure that boaters know the basic rules of the road and because all of the surveys we have done over the years have told us that our members support phased-in mandatory education.

We have, however, asked for two clarifications: First, that if a boater has taken a course …

"Murphy Goes Racing", the annual SBRNYCU  racing  seminar on Saturday, January 27, 2007.   This year's interactive and entertaining workshop is designed for  all skippers and crew interested in brushing up on racing fundamentals, to include sessions on:   boat optimization, crew organization, sail trim, starting techniques, and general tactics and strategy.   John McCarthy, US Sailing Advanced Race Officer, Judge, and, first and foremost, racer and kindred spirit of those who race, will conduct the workshop.
