There are no known pictures to prove or disprove the yarns shared and claims made at brunch Sunday morning about the 2010 Smith Point Race, started August 21. The Race Committee can, however, confirm that vicious tides, a prestart wind shift and light air at the start brought a couple of competitors to an intimacy with the Race Committee's anchor line neither desired nor intended, but all ten boats got off safely in 4-6 knots of breeze at 2:00 in the afternoon. The forecast held, and the wind slowly but steadily built to a solid 10-12 knot southerly breeze for the sprint up the bay.

The racing was characterized by moderate to heavy winds and strong harbor currents. Sophie drove with Mike trimming jib and working foredeck and Noel trimming main and spinnaker. Fishing Bay is hosting the 76th-annual Hampton One Design National Championship August 20, 21, and 22. The Hampton Class is returning its Championship to the club for the first time since 1948.

Organizers are expecting about 20 boats from various yacht clubs, including PRSA, HYC, NY&CC, TAYC, BBSA, CYC and WRYC. The competitors will include some of the top dinghy sailors from around the Bay, including collegiate all-Americans, past Optimist National Champions, Collegiate and Interscholastic sailors and Coaches, sail makers, and good-old-fashioned class stalwarts like Norfolk’s Charlie McCoy who will be competing in his 52nd (fifty-second) consecutive HOD Nationals. This year’s event saw record breaking attendance from the Flying Scot Fleet with 36 boats registered. Additionally, the San Juan 21s showed up again with the largest numbers to date. For the first time in many years a Windmill fleet consisting of 7 boats joined us …

The following week, the team attended the New England Optimist Championships in Newport, hosted by Sail Newport. There were about 330 Optis in the Red, White, and Blue fleets. Alex Hanna got a 4th overall, and Kendall Swenson was the 6th girl and got a 30th overall. Deeper in the finish order were 70 Will Whitmore, 71 Gray …

A wonderful video from the Clyde Cruising Club's attempt to break their previous record number of boats forming a sunflower during the Centenary Cruise. They didn't quite get the 200 boats they had hoped for, but, still, quite a muster. Must have been a great experience for the Crumps, Garretts, and Haywards.

We have revamped the Pirate Cruz event originally envisioned for Little Bay in an attempt to address the diversity of requests, conflicting club and personal schedules. We have heard that some members would like to participate in the event but do not have access to a "cruising" boat. Others are participating in the Annual One Design Regatta and many juniors are being recruited to participate in the regatta as well. Still others have conflicts with work or family schedules, which limit their availability for an extended weekend cruise. As a result, we made the following adjustments:

Changed the location to Gwynn's Island
Collaborating with the Annual One Design Regatta for Dinner (Aug 14) and Breakfast (Aug 15 …
