Crew Training Program

Allan Heyward on

Offshore Racing

This course consists of three classroom sessions and two to three optional practice sessions on the water on board racing sailboats. It is offered by Fishing Bay Yacht Club (FBYC) to give sailors and non-sailors alike the basic information, understanding of terminology and confidence to crew on a racing sailboat. Following the last classroom session, there will be a social gathering for participants, instructors and FBYC’s racing skippers. All participants will receive written materials that complement the classroom sessions and include FBYC’s 2010 racing schedule. On-the-water training opportunities will be available at FBYC Saturday, April 3, and Saturday, April 10, to place interested participants with FBYC racing skippers and crews on their boats for a practice session to …

Word is, from a reliable source (even though he is a sailboat racer), that Travis Weisleder, who races his J105 out of Fishing Bay,  has acquired  Layline.  Sounds like we will have another top quality equipment supplier with a local connection.
USNA sending INTEGRITY and DEFIANCE to SBRW 2010.  The United States Naval Academy has entered two of their offshore race boats, both Navy 44 MK2's, in SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK. Integrity and Defiance each carry a rating of 81 and will race in PHRF A.  The likely skippers of the boats crewed by Academy Midshipmen, are Midn Alex Dolan (Integrity) and Midn Emily Frost (Defiance).   Other Early Birds who have tossed their caps …

ORACLE (USA) WINS AC #33 - Brings Home the Cup - it's been away for 15 years!  Oracle crushed the Swiss entry Alinghi in each of the best 2 out of  3 races  off Velencia Spain, for the American's Cup.  Our high tech trimaran walloped their high tech catamaran. So, our engineers beat the heck out of  their engineers.  Perhaps the Swiss should stick to clocks and chocolate!   Now, the questions are what will the participant conditions be for the next AC competition and where it will the racing take place.   Stay tuned.  There's more info at www.americascup.com   And, there is some unbelievable stuff on the start of race 2, including a mutiny on the RC …

A Dust-up on America's Cup Race Committee

John Beery on

Offshore Racing

A quite revealing report from Bob Fisher at the America's Cup during the Starting Sequence of Race #2. Seems there was bad blood on board. I find this fascinating when considering the level at which Race Management should be for the "premier sailing event in the world".

Read Bob's report here

Here is the pertinent part of Bob Fisher's report:

"On board the committee boat, the members of the SNG refused to handle the flags. It was left to the Golden Gate YC representative and a chase boat driver to assist Harold Bennett. The reason for the SNG spat was unclear, but it has been suggested that they would have preferred not to race. The GGYC representative …

The America's Cup has started. The first race got off around 8:30am EST and is currently being streamed live on the BMW/Oracle Racing Website. It's also available on ESPN360.com.

Here is a older video of the BMW/Oracle boat in action

If you are not familiar with sailboat racing this is the Superbowl of sailboat racing and it's happening this week. Larry Ellison (owner of Oracle) and Ernesto Bertarelli a European pharmaceutical billionaire have built a 90' x 90' trimaran and a 90'x90' catamaran. They are absolutely incredible and they sail 2-3 times the speed of the wind.

They are racing a best of 3 series to determine the winner of the America …

It's good to be 4P:  If you intend to race PHRF, you need a 2010 Valid Rating Certificate from PHRF of the Chesapeake, and, for most southern Bay races, you must meet PHRF Equipment Category 4P.   PHRF is very specific about what is required when YOU check the Equipment Category box on the application.  PHRF says,  "Ensure you review the PHRF Special Regulations for safety requirements and sign the Certification of Compliance  (Keep this certificate on your boat) BEFORE checking off the Equipment Category (4P, 5P,  or 6P).  Your application form must check off the Equipment Category (4P, 5P, or 6P)."   NOTE:  The "lifeline exception" to the 4P requirements is clearly explained …
