The 49th Newport Bermuda Race starts today in Newport, RI. At least 2 boats have FBYC connections - Carina, owned by Rives Potts and Nanuq, owned by Glenn Doncaster. Both are competing in Class 3 - St. David's Lighthouse division - see scratch sheet - Live race tracking is available at http://pantaenius.us/en/american-yacht-insurance/newport-bermuda-race/live-race-tracking.html and it will have a 4 hour delay for the first 2 days of the race. Tracking is available on mobile using the Yellowbrick App (available at the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. ) The latest Gulf Stream analysis shows "The structure of the Stream and associated features continues to favor routes to the west of the rhumb line with exact displacements varying as a function of boat characteristics and the ongoing winds. Once clear of the southern limits of the cold core ring there is little indication of adverse currents sufficient to call for anything but a straight line course to Bermuda."
In the Race Preview News Release they mention Carina -- "Class 3 features Carina, sailed by Rives Potts and his regular crew of friends. They had an excellent weekend tune-up in the New York Yacht Club 160th annual Regatta presented by Rolex, Carina has won the St. David’s Lighthouse Division and the sterling trophy in the past two races. She also won in 1970 under then owner Richard Nye. If Carina wins, she will be the yacht holding the most Lighthouse trophies. She will again be tested in her class by another Naval Academy boat, Defiance, which finished second in class and second in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division in 2012."
