onWe couldn't have asked for a much nicer day on Saturday for the One Design Invitational. Four Front Runners and 3 San Juan 21s and Geoff Cahill were out racing on a day that started with light winds in a building sea breeze and mostly sunny skies.
PRO Parker Garrett and his crew of Young Adult Members set a 1/4 mile course with a windward mark just off Stove Point. The sound signals were a little unconventional but let's just say Parker has a way with horns.
The Front Runner racing was close all the way around. Boren and Squires were both sailing a Front Runner for the first time and were having a great day of going 2-2-1 in the first 3 races and leading at that point. In the 4th race Mark Stephens and Mayo Tabb beach Boren/Squires and set them back a couple points leaving them tied for the lead. A great final race by Jon Deutsch and Alan Williamson broke the tie to win the day and a 2nd in the final race by Matt Lambert and Chuck Pessler gave them 3rd on the day. Boren & Squires would finish 2nd - not bad for first timers.
The San Juan 21s raced Portsmouth with Geoff Cahill's boat and saw some close racing, but McClure and Montague had all 1s and 2s and won the day by a good margin. Mike Chesser singlehanding his boat finished 2nd just one point ahead of Thompson/Holdaway. Geoff Cahill wasn't able to overcome the handcap to hurt the San Juan's and finished 4th.
