The J 70 Friday Night Series is in full swing. This Friday July 5, 2019 will be epic! We should have 5 boats available for all J 70 supporters and interested sailors. The weather looks great and as we all know Friday is a holiday for most sailors. Craig Ciszewski will be our race officer. Dock time is 6 pm so come a little earlier to be assigned to a boat -- no sailor will be left behind. We will have dinner and refreshments afterwards provided by Miss Hotty Toddy! (better known as my wife Beth Merchent). See you on Friday Steve Q.

Middlesex First Responders Appreciation Day--August 17

Karen Soule on

Club News

We all rely on the Middlesex EMT and Fire Department squads.  Yet for those of us who don't live in the county, it's easy to forget how important these men and women are...until an emergency strikes someone at FBYC.

Let's say THANK YOU to these fine folks by hosting them and their families for a "fun day at FBYC" on Saturday, August 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM.

We're inviting them to use our pool, go for a sail on a club or big boat and have a picnic lunch. We're looking for some members who are willing to flip some burgers or take a family sailing for an hour or two.

This is just a small way …

RC & Laser Training

On Sunday Race Committee recruits got some hands on practice starting races and operating Mr. Roberts. David Clark and Rick Klein led the class and were eventually banished to the bow of Mr. Roberts as the recruits got comfortable with the procedures.

6 Lasers were there to practice starts for the RC and simulate some real-world start situations like when boats are over early or when a signal boat drags anchor.  Thanks to Mike Toms for organizing and Finn Ciszewski, Britt Drake, Jess Hardin, Jon Deutsch and Paul Almany for coming out and sailing.

FBYC Women Rock...and Dock

Karen Soule on

Cruising News

Saturday's "Women's Skill-Building" day on the water gave six sailors loads of practice docking (thanks Deltaville Boatyard for your new T-Head!) and "springing off" against an onshore breeze. Everyone had a chance to practice and embrace the old maxim, "approach a dock as fast as you're willing to hit it."  Each sailor did a fantastic job and learned that a second approach is encouraged and more than OK when it's needed.

We also had a brief look at AIS radios, SOLAS flares and practiced fighting a fire with ABC extinguishers.  "There is far less powder in an extinguisher than I appreciated before pulling the pin on one," said one sailor.  (Thank you Brian for safely providing a fire …
