onA little rain and drizzle couldn’t keep the Lasers from sailing in FBYC’s Laser Fall Regatta. 14 full rigs and 4 radials sailed 5 races in what started as 11-13 knots and dropped to 6-8 by the last race. Many sailors used this as a tune up for the 39th Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship at FBYC next weekend including a few Annapolis sailors.
The fleet all sailed very well and was fun to sail with. Evan Hoffman (SDYC) a Snipe Sailor from Richmond and former ODU sailor got out to a great start with a bullet in the first race in his first time in a Laser in years. Evan would end up 2nd overall on the day. James Jacob (SSA) and Jon Deutsch (FBYC) duked it out for 3rd place with James finishing 1-2 in the final two races to close the gap and have the tiebreaker for 3rd. The day belonged to David Waiting (SSA) who consistently had great starts and generally picked good lines and shifts out to the left to be in the top 3 at almost every first rounding. He used his speed downwind to finish in the top 2 of every race and win the day.
Scot Williamson (SSA), Rob Whittemore (FBYC), Natalie Burls (SSA), Mike Moore (DGYC), Mike Colbert (SSA), Mike Toms (FBYC) and Britt Drake (FBYC) made up the rest of the pack that mixed it up all day long.
Reid McAllister (FBYC) had straight bullets to win the Radial fleet. Thanks to Bob, Lisa, Ruthana, Clark, Jen and the rest of their help for running a great set of races. And to Britt for keeping us hydrated post-race.
