2004. Racing begins Friday, June 4, for "big boats", and Saturday,
June 5, for one-design (dinghy). On the "big boat" courses, expect 2 races
each of the three days (conditions permitting). For info go to the web
site at www.blacksealcup.com.
Entries were due May 28th, BUT, with a late entry fee, there is still time to
enter. Contact: Martin Holland at (757)
726-0289.
MEMORIAL DAY. Thank
you to those who stood and those who are standing on the wall for us
all.
Media
Watch: Check out the June issue of Sailing World, page 16,
"Weekend Warriors". Two North Carolina race teams who are active in
the southern Bay scene are featured. Michael Jones, who
had his SR 33 Outrageous at last year's BSC-SBRW, is recognized for his
fleet (PHRF B) win at Charleston Race Week this past April. And,
Frank Silver, recent winner of the Albemarle 100, and PHRF
division winner at Key West and Charleston Race Week, already has his boat on
site, behind the North Sails Hampton loft, ready to go for the 2004
BSC-SBRW.
OK, Ladies, a
really good sailing opportunity is available now - The
Women's Dinghy Sailing Clinic (June 12
&13) is a customized course for women sailors at the beginning
or intermediate level. You get a chance to take the helm and to
crew. The course is taught in 420s (2 person boat) and you get a lot of
real on the water training and experience during the weekend.
Carolyn Grant and Leigh Morgan are the
instructors. Hampton Yacht Club sponsors this course for all comers.
Sign up now and put yourself in the boat on the water! Contact Leigh
Morgan at (757) 726-9640 or Joan Baker at the HYC office (757)
722-0711.
BSC - SBRW IMPORTANT
REMINDER: If you plan to race BSC-SBRW in a PHRF fleet, the handicap
ratings for the regatta "...shall be those in effect and defined on the PHRF
Valid List as of 1900, Thursday, June 3, 2004," as stated in the SI.
NOTE: The chief handicapper for PHRF in the southern Chesapeake
is Rusty Burshell (757) 898-2887.
When the 5o5s
were racing in Hampton recently, the competitors included quite a field.
On the same race course were: Krysia Pohl (2nd in the
recently completed Europe Dinghy Olympic Trials), Ali Meller
(current 5o5 East Coast Champ), Henry and Douglas Amthor
(current 5o5 Canadian Champs, but not sailing together in this regatta),
Tyler Moore (current 5o5 North American Champ) and
Barney Harris (current Albacore World Champ). Now that's
a lot of star power. Krysia Pohl and Ali Meller won the two day
regatta.
Well, here we go again - Someone,
this time a racing sailor, has offended yet another segment of European
society: In April Steve Fossett and his crew set a new
round the world (RTW) record by making the trip in 58 days, 9 hours. Most
southern Bay racers already knew that, because they followed
Cheyenne's, aka PlayStation's, progress for over a year
beginning when the team and boat stayed in Hampton Roads for several months
preparing for the run at the record. However, Steve declined to pay the
Jules Verne Trophy fee ($30K), and offense was taken and so...
Actually, so what? Maybe Steve feels that when and IF someone else beats
his record, they can pick up the "trophy fee".
Flying Scots,
Frontrunners, and Lasers at Fishing Bay: Three classes flew
around the course last week in a day of racing - 4 races for each fleet.
John Beery and Debbie Cycotte topped the Scots, Matt
Braun led the Frontrunners, and Brad Squires had three
bullets and a second on the Laser competition.
New 5o5 Racer in the
Fleet: Three Sundays ago , during the HYC 5o5 Spring
Regatta, Swayne Sparkman arrived on the scene.
Steve and Ann Sparkman's baby daughter was born at 1:00 am, May
16, and weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces.
Congratulations!
More racing pupsters reporting for
duty. Casey, the smiling lab who sails with
Andy and Virginia Armstrong on Virginia
H (PHRF B), has supplied an entire big boat crew. She and Polar Bear,
from out in Prince George county, now have a family of eight white and
yellow pups. That's a lot of puppydog tails!
