onBLACK SEAL CUP-SOUTHERN BAY RACE
WEEK: TITILLATION WINS OVERALL TITLE, DOMINATES 17 BOAT PHRF
B: Chessie served up a varied menu over the three day event.
56 "big boats" sailed on two venues in all kinds of
conditions over the weekend. BSC-SBRW opened Friday on a wild and wooly
day, winds averaging a steady mid to high teens (highest gust reported was 25
knots) with wind against current making for significant square waves (three and
one-half feet). The second day Chessie offered up perfect racing
conditions with breezes going southwest in the 10-14 range. And,
Day 3 brought frustration because of the light and variable
conditions. The RC did get in one race on each venue on Sunday, and the 5
races went into the event record books. RESULTS: PHRF A:
Kahuna, S. Richardson (2-5-1-1-1); 2.
Scherherazade, S. Shelhorse (1-1-3-3-3); 3. Sea
Star, V. Eberwine (3-2-2-2-2). PHRF B: 1.
Titillation, P. Andersen (1-1-2-2-1); 2.
Kimber, D. McConaughy (2-3-6-1-3); 3.

BLUE WATER RACERS GET STARTED:
BERMUDA OCEAN RACE
leaves Annapolis this coming Friday, June 11. You can follow the
progress of the fleet, which includes southern Bay racers Checks in the
Mail (Jim Williams), Glory Days
(Mike Nestor), and Nereid (Eric
Powers) at www.bermudaoceanrace.com
Eastport YC is host club for the Annapolis start. The fleet will be
guests of the St. George's Dinghy and Sports Club once they reach
Bermuda.
ONION PATCH RACERS,
Orion, Pat Patterson's Taylor 41, and
Prevail, Mark Shaw/J. Scott Beneteau 42s7, will
race in Newport this coming Saturday and Sunday as a prelude to the Newport to
Bermuda Race (start is June 18).
The first day of Black Sea Cup - Southern Bay Race
Week was a challenge for most on the course, racers and race
committee alike. However, race committee member Buk
Lawrence, undeterred by conditions, insisted on improving his platform
diving skills by executing a one-quarter belly-flop off the signal boat.
He scored all 10s except for the French judge, who gave him a 4 based on
open mouth and unusual facial expression. NOTE: Buk was quickly
retrieved and resumed his RC duties.
CBM BEST ON THE BAY:
Chesapeake Bay Magazine has announced their "Best on the Bay" awards
for 2004. Two southern Bay regattas are tied for 2nd place: The
Yankee Point Turkey Shoot Hospice Regatta (October 8-10, 2004) and
the upcoming Cock Island Race (June 26, 2004). CBM readers
voted Best Regatta top honors to the Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge (July
18-19-20, 2004). It is worth a racer's while to get to all
three.
Standing on the front steps of BSC-SBRW headquarters club,
HYC, during a particularly heavy downpour after the first day of racing,
a member of the Cyrano (Bob Mosby )
crew remarked on human nature - "I've been out there racing in heavy weather on
the Chesapeake Bay all day, and here I stand, afraid to go to my car
because I might get wet!"
RC Boats on the Southern Bay: Dick
Boykin's long time signal boat, Might As Well, has gone to a
new home and career (Rudee Inlet, Virginia Beach, fishing).
This past weekend John and Lin McCarthy's Salty
Dog ( DownEast Seaworthy) was right at home in Friday's messy conditions at
Southern Bay Race Week given the boat's birthplace on the rugged coast of
Maine.
York River Cup - Saturday, June 12 - CBYRA
sanctioned racing - all PHRF fleets and a Cruising fleet - post-race
social. For info contact Mike Mastracci at (757)
872-9564.
Seeing Red: Red hull boats seem to be
gaining in numbers on the race course: At BSC-SBRW there were 4 bright red
babes: Kahuna (Farr 395, Sandford
Richardson); Tantrum (Tartan 10, Tim Savage);
Titillation (J/29, Paul Andersen); and
Shenanigan (Tartan 10, M.W.Booth).
More Red: There's a new Opti
model on the market now - Vanguard's Red Dragon.
It comes from Shanghai and word is the first two shipments were sold out before
the ship hit the USA docks. Opti Moms and Pops will like the fact that it
sells for around $250 less than the usual Opti. Phil and
Arabella Denvir have the Vanguard dealership in White Stone, VA, where
they have a Red Dragon on display. They also sell Lasers, Sunfish, 420s,
Zumas, Optis etc. along with parts and accoutrements. Contact the Denvirs at
Premier Sailing (804) 438-9300.
Bob Fleck's (Alexandria, VA) S2 7.9,
Horizon, was doing just fine in BSC-SBRW; she won PHRF C Race 1 in
a breeze. Then disaster struck when her mast snapped and fell. She
spent the rest of the weekend on her trailer in a Bridge Street parking
lot. Sad. As with any regatta, there is
usually equipment carnage: head foils break, rudders snap, sails
tear, spinnakers blow up, blocks pull out, masts fall down, halyards break,
and... all part of the game. One person in particular usually
bears the financial burden for this "part of the game" though, and that's the
skipper/owner. A "thank you" from understanding crew is a good thing for
him or her stroking the checks.
YANKEE POINT YC SINGLEHAND
RACE set for Saturday, June 19th. For info check out the web site at www.ypyc.org or contact Dwight Timm
at (804) 462-7119
Chuck Monsees'
Rockette (J/29) team from PRYC gets the award
for best support vehicle at BSC-SBRW. The Rockette - ites
are tended to by a bright yellow vehicle with a red Rockette on it
that resembles an updated version of the old "Mission
Impossible" truck. Nice set up!
Little Creek Sailing Assoc - BBSA Series
Winners: The spring series is in the books for the LCSA-BBSA gang
sailing off East Beach in Ocean View (Norfolk). Fleet winners are:
Spinnaker - Butch Patterson, Small
Potato; Non-Spin 1 - Sonny Smith,
Restless 7; and Non-Spin 2 - Ken Irwin,
Southern Style.
Clark Mabrey, who crews on several boats
around the southern Bay circuit, frequently on Ganar!
(Dave Bouchard), has very recently retired
from the Army (TRADOC at Fort Monroe). Clark is a familiar face in the
sailing community and most appreciated for helping clubs who wanted to use the
famous ROCK GROINS of Ft. Monroe to finish races. He knew and shared all
the secrets of navigating the protocols of getting permission through the proper
official channels. Thanks to Clark for his service to racers, but, even
more, for service to our Nation. He'll be staying in the Hampton Roads
area.
During Black Seal
Cup-Southern Bay Race Week a couple of boats experienced an
MOB situation during a rain squall on the first
day. In both cases the boat had broached. The incidents were
reported on the radio to the race committee, support boats were
immediately dispatched and other race boats in the vicinity responded as
well. In both cases the crew member was quickly and safely
retrieved by his own boat. REMEMBER: When practicing and
briefing crew on MOD procedures, have whomever is on the radio report the
approximate location of the boat, e.g. half-way up leg one, 100 yards from
the windward mark, east or west of the rhumb line, etc. - so that valuable
time will not be lost to support boats or others coming to assist.
Good racers always know where they
are on the race course (just listen to the post-race party tales), so
remember to put that info to good use in emergency situations.
John Traut,
regular crew and crewmate of highly respected racer Terry Hutchison on the
Farr 40 Barking Mad, was back to his adopted home this weekend and handled the bow on
John Hanna's Battlewagon.
Take yourself [and
skipper, crew, family] out to the ball game: The Leukemia Cup
Regatta has come up with a Saturday Night entertainment event to raise funds for
the cause. Saturday, June 19th is Leukemia Night at
the Deltaville Ball Park. This could be a fun time to be together and
you'll have both hands available for beverages and hotdogs - a break from
halyard haulin' and winch grindin'! The actual Leukemia Cup Regatta
is July 10th.
The crew of Cheryl Lea (J/29, Ben
Weeks) gets the bulldog award for BSC-SBRW: During Race 1
they broke their main halyard. Refusing to give up, they hustled in,
secured/procured another, installed it, and returned to the race area in time to
start but more than six minutes behind their fleet (PHRF B) and still managed a
4th (among 15 boats) for the second race.
MURPHY'S LAW: Southern
Bay Race Week was great. The Black Seal, which is part dog for sure -
they bark, don't they? - was here and the beer truck did not wash away in the
monsoons of Friday night! It's all good! Living to race, racing
to live. Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all
