on6th Annual SOUTHERN CHESAPEAKE BAY LEUKEMIA CUP
REGATTA is all set for racing on Saturday, July 10. CBYRA
sanctioned event for appropriate fleets plus a cruising fleet and a classics
classes division. For those from the mid and southern parts of our region,
this is also a chance to "race your way" to Screwpile. Stop in Fishing Bay
to do the Leukemia Cup Regatta, leave the boat there until the appropriate day
the following week, and then move on up to Screwpile. Now, there's
a nugget of a plan! For info on the LCR contact Judy Buis at (804)

July 4th, Independence Day
holiday, is this coming weekend. Exercise your freedom - go
sailing! Look for your next issue (#208) of
SBRNYCU on Monday, July 12, 2004.
ORION Wins
Fleet in Newport to Bermuda - Pat Patterson's Orion ( Taylor
41- Hampton YC) was first across the line at the finish in his fleet. And,
there was no one else in sight. From Jim Miller aboard
Orion, via phone to Carolyn Grant, came word that they
crossed the finish line around 4:45 pm, Tuesday, June 22, and that very shortly
thereafter the wind went to 0-5 knots. As of 9:00 am, Wednesday, no other
boat in their IMSCR class had finished.
Prevail, the Mark Shaw/John Scott Beneteau
47s7 sailing out of Norfolk Yacht &CC in her first outing in this event,
finished 8th of 14 in the Americap class. Now, it is on to the next part of the
Onion Patch Series in Bermuda for Orion. Prevail planned
to do only the Newport to Bermuda section of the larger series.
Kudos to both for fine showings.
Seven clubs are now qualified to

Academy Sailing Squadron. To compete for the BOC trophy, a

additional boats. Performance in the regatta counts too! www.screwpile.com for additional
info.
WING AND A PRAYER
Wins Hanbury Trophy at Cock Island Race - Cathy Switzer, just did
make it to the 17th Cock Island Race: "We just finished [getting the

entered. Switzer and crew won the overall trophy by beating the 2nd place
boat in their fleet by the largest margin. Wing and a Prayer

Yikes!
Will there be a #18 Cock
Island Race? The docks and party tents were awash with
rumor this weekend. Fact is that PortsEvents is being disbanded by the
City of Portsmouth. Linda English (nee
Lamb) and her staff have been the race event on-the-ground
organizers for years. Question now is: Will the race, brainchild of
Mo Whitlow , with his cohorts Dan Winters and
Sanford Richardson, go on? Stay tuned.
CHRIS BEHM and MEG
CALLAHAN finished 5th in 420s in USSAILING Youth Championship
Regatta: The team of Chris Behm and Meg
Callahan, sailing out of Hampton, Virginia, finished 5th among 48
competitors in their class (Club 420s) in this prestigious
event. 149 young racers were on the water, all invited based on
their racing accomplishments. Behm/Callahan put together a string that
included 2 first places in the 11 race regatta -
17-5-13-6-1-11-14-[32]-1-4-12.
More southern Bay Screwpile entries:
Temptress, Hunter 356, Robert Dejong
(CCV), Mirage, Hobie 33, Christian
Schaumloffel (HYC), and Impulse, Catalina 34, Tom
Peddy (HYC) join the Screwpile ranks. That brings southern Bay
brigade strength to 28 boats. Join the regatta now - first informal,
unofficial troop deployment will likely be to the Tiki Bar, opening night,
Saturday, July 17.
In the Grog & Gruel
Bermuda Ocean Race, Annapolis to Bermuda, two southern Bay
boats made the full trip. Mike Nestor's Glory Days
(finished 2nd in her 8 boat division) and Eric Powers
Nereid. 34 entries began this event and more than a
quarter (9) abandoned or retired (went to motor sailing) during the
passage.
Got $3 million? Well then,
you may want to consider making an offer on Steve
Fossett's record setting maxi-cat Cheyenne, aka
PlayStation.
Former 1D35, Mumm 30, and J/120 racers Nick and
Tina Worth (Norfolk/Hampton) have brought their band new Duffy 35
Maine downeast style beauty home. Lovely.
Southern Bay racer - biker, Road Warrior Greg
Cutter (Gremellyn) is back, safe and sound. Said it rained
everyday and he ate caribou steak just south of the Arctic Circle. Like...
yummy.
Word is racers are
doing great on reserving their rooms, beds, sofas, v-berths, back seats in
vans, etc. for SCREWPILE 2004 at Solomons, MD. Now, check
on the skipper and make sure he or she has all the entry paperwork done - do it
by THIS WEDNESDAY, June 30, and the $50 saved on entry
fees can go toward a round or two at the Tiki Bar!
(Screwpile 2004 - registration/opening Saturday, July 17 - racing on July
18-19-20.) www.screwpile.com
