onNOT SMITH POINT - PLENTY
OF WIND - AHHHHHHHHHHH! CCV's NOT SMITH POINT RACE was a
tour around southern Bay marks, a break from the windward-leeward routine.
Yesterday Sea Star, Rhumb Line, Movin' On and
Black Widow were the tour leaders. 32 boats refused to listen to
the "We're doomed, doomed" talk on the weather channels and got in a
great day of racing in winds that built from 8-10 at the start to 16 true when
the first boat to finish (Scherherazade) crossed the line.
Fleets A and B ran an 18.54 nm course that included a nice 6
mile power reach, and Fleets C and Non-Spin went 15.49 nm.
RESULTS: PHRF A : 1.Bumps and David
Eberwine, Sea Star; 2.Christian Schaumloffel,
Mirage; 3.Craig Olsen, Namesake.
PHRF B: 1. Bill Chandler, Rhumb Line;
2.Mike Nestor, Glory Days; 3.Neal
Garrett, Strega. PHRF C: 1.Mike
Austin, Movin' On; 2.Bob Archer, About
Time; 3.Tripp Behm, Haywire. PHRF
NS: 1.Leo Wardrup, Black Widow; 2.Justin
Morris, The Hunter; 3.Jake Brodersen,
Midnight Mistress. PRO: John McCarthy
This coming Sunday,
there's more CCV High Point racing - 2004 CCV FOUNDERS
RACE - Sunday, August 1, 2004. The starting line moves to the area off
Willoughby Bank, approximately 2nm ESE of Fort Wool. The warning for the
first class is scheduled for 1100. IF you have a CCV Racing
Membership, you are already entered. Otherwise, entries are due
Saturday, July 31, NLT 1300 hours. For info contact John McCarthy at
(757) 850-4225. This is a CBYRA sanctioned race.
OOPS! That's Mike AUSTIN [not Anderson],
skipper of Movin' On, who captured a 3rd place in his fleet at
Screwpile. That's no easy task either, especially on your first
time at the highly competitive event. Mike and his crew were one of three
southern Bay boats that brought home silverware from Solomons last week.
Movin' On sails out of the York River Yacht Club and Wormley
Creek Marina and currently leads the PHRF C fleet in the CCV High Point
standings. The name boo-boo appeared in the special SBRNYCU Zap Flash
that summarized the southern Bay boat finishes. Mike has good friends
who called about the error - thank you all. Mike will be forwarding
payments directly to you.
The Veterans Cup Race, sponsored by Langley Yacht Club, is set to go on Saturday, July 31,
2004. This is a CBYRA sanctioned event. Starts are
offered for all PHRF classes. For info contact John Ritter at (757)
865-1302 or (757) 764-7230.
Coming Up:
BBSA SMALL BOAT REGATTA - Saturday, July 31 - venue is the Old Dominion
University Sailing Center - for info contact Jean Pattenaude at (757)

Calling all
racers/sailors: Lloyd Hicks, of the 4-H Jamestown Center, is
honcho-ing the gathering
of 9 to 13 year olds to be held at
the camp/center August 23-27. Lloyd wants very much to
give the kids an opportunity to become familiar with sailing and sailboats,
i.e., let the kids touch a sailboat, hear a real sailor talk about
sailing. Sometimes, that's all it takes to strike a spark for a
lifetime interest. If you think you could help, give Lloyd
Hicks a call right away at (804) 501-5160. The Center is located
just upstream of the Jamestown Ferry slip. Kids and boats are a great
combination!
Stop the Jellies:
There's a new product on the "boaters will buy anything"
market. It's a sun lotion that claims to protect against jellyfish stings
too. Imagine, racers drifting around waiting for a fickle August racing
breeze can smear this stuff on from head to toe and jump in for a dip. If
it doesn't work, you'll jump right back out!

HOSPICE
Sunday, August 8,
2004 . Sail for a good cause and get points for the CBYRA High Point
awards too. This event has been around for a decade and offers undoubtedly
one of the most beautiful trophies anywhere. It's the Turner dolphin
sculpture. In addition to all PHRF classes, the Hospice offers a start for
a Hospice (Cruising) class. And, the overall winner goes to Annapolis
next spring to race against other Hospice winners from all parts of the
country for the national Hospice championship. Get yourself in
gear and do this race. Last year Hurricane Isabel washed out the Hampton
Roads Hospice regatta and we need to make up for lost time. For info
contact Glenn Giles at (757) 851-9690 or (757) 380-3066.
Willoughby Racers (BBSA)
keep Little Bay Challenge Title: The Little Bay Challenge ran two
Saturday's ago (while a lot of the southern Bay was in Solomons at Screwpile)
and 33 boats played in the fluky 5-12 knot winds. Team scoring gave
the overall trophy to The Willoughby Racers (7), Hampton YC was second with 10
points, Little Creek SA (BBSA) was third with 18 points, Old Point Comfort YC
finished with 21 points and Portsmouth Boat Club with 22.
The 40th Virginia
Governor's Cup - August 7 & 8 - sponsored by the Ware River Yacht
Club. Invited classes are Albacore, Hampton One Design, Laser, Mobjack,
Moth, Buccaneer, Skipjack and PHRF. This is a great regatta
run primarily on the Ware River (PHRF on Mobjack Bay). You can tent
on the club grounds and run barefoot in the grass. And, after the regatta
on your way home, stop at the nearby Peace Frog tee-shirt factory. For
info call Bob Marble at (804) 693-2932.

MURPHY'S LAW:
Yesterday the NSP race course was the only place in the area spared
torrential downpours, doomsday clouds, and inch wide lightning strikes.
While the non-racing populace located their arks, southern Bay racers
zoomed around the course and entered Hampton Roads Harbor right behind a
returning US Navy aircraft carrier. Proving once again it never rains
on golfers golfing or racers racing. Living to race, racing to live.
