This coming weekend - racing for young and old and all
ages in between: Big boat racers can sense the end of the
season lurkin' a couple of months away - fewer weekends than most of us have
fingers and toes. The idea is not to miss any racing opportunities.
Here are two, both on Saturday, August 14th -
2004 Tom Brady Master's Race, aka The Old Farts'
Race Skipper and crew and everyone else on board must be 55
years old or older, and the boat must be at least 10 years old. No
spinnakers, single headsail only. Post race social; sponsored by Hampton
YC. For info contact Kathy Brady at (757) 723-3244.
Or, try The Admiral's Cup Regatta
- Race venue is in the Bay in the area of the Poquoson River/York River
entrances. Start/Finish line is at the entrance to Back CREEK. The
first starting signal is at 1300 hours, so everyone has time to get there.
The post race social and awards presentation will be held at the Seaford Yacht
Club. This will be a nice change of scenery and good racing. CBYRA
sanctioned event. Sponsored by York River Yacht Club and Seaford Yacht
Club. For info contact Steve Bowen (804) 642-4746 or Carl Early (757)
890-2743.

Imagine what the Cock Island Race folks must have been dealing
with!
Wide Open Southern Bay Spaces:
At the same time yesterday, within view of one another, in the Hampton
Roads harbor area, here's what went on: The Hospice Regatta was sailed
just beyond Hampton Flats; an entire "city of fishing boats" set up near the
Navy ammo barge; a mini cigarette boat poker run moved along the edges; tugboats
worked the mouth of the James, plying their trade; freighters and container
ships moved up and down the Norfolk Reach channel; and, the US Navy, including
three carriers, kept a watchful eye. Waking up to all this, was one lone
cruiser who had dropped his hook the night before. And, all day, not one
horn sounded in anger!
Ridin' High in the High Point
Standings: CCV has 7 of the 11 scheduled CCV High Point
Championship Races in the books. The season gets down to the nitty-gritty
now and a lot of hardware winners will be determined by the outcome of the four
race CCV Fall Series ( three consecutive Sundays beginning September
26th). JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT, CONSIDER THIS:
For the sake of playing "what if", if you take only the best 5 races
scored to date: PHRF A, Sea Star and Scherherazade
are neck and neck (8 points each) and Mirage and Kahuna are all knotted
up in a fight for 3rd with 15 points each. PHRF B, has Rumble in first,
leading Cool Change by 3 points and Rhumb Line and
Strega are tied up with 17 points each in a battle for third
overall. PHRF C shows that Movin' On has the top spot to
lose (6 points), but 6 points separate About Time (12) and
Callinectes (18) in 2nd and 3rd; and in PHRF Non-Spin, Checks in
the Mail (9), No Problem (11) and Midnight Mistress (13)
currently are in unsecured top spots. Remember, all of this
can and probably will change. If Fall Series gets all four races
in, competitors will score their best 8 of 11 races... and who knows what that
will do to the apple cart.
MURPHY'S LAW: On the
southern Bay we all enjoy good fortune, room, and freedom to "do our
thing." Even those bushels of blue crabs served at the Hospice post race
party on the HYC flag deck had, at one time, had their day!
Living to race, racing to live. Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing
spirit in us all
