#213 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday August 23, 2004 04:48PM
onSouthern Bay J24 Match
Racing Regatta made good use of Saturday and Sunday's great sailing
breezes to complete a single round robin among 7 boats. When all was said
and done, Haywire, Tripp Behm and crew (HYC)
trampled the rest, winning each of their races. North Carolinian
Ron Medlin (PSA), Bash, was second, and
Mark Wensell (FBYC) was third. Race Chairman: Brooks
Zerkle. This is the second year for the J24 match racing event in the
southern Bay, this year hosted by Fishing Bay YC.
RICE - WALLIO win 45th
MOBJACK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: Skipper Jim Rice
(Newport News) and crew Pete Wallio
(Hampton) came away with the 2004 Mobjack crown after 3 days of
hard sailing in plenty of wind at the mouth of the Piankatank River this past
weekend. The duo wrested the crown from defending champion
Trey Smith and Jordan Wintringham of Virginia
Beach. Tom Roberts, president of the International
Mobjack Association and event chairman, said that, under the new revised
by-laws, the 8 races were the most ever sailed at a national
championship for the class. Friday and Saturday racing was
demanding with winds from the southwest topping out at 20. The final two
races on Sunday featured a shifty northeasterly at 10-15 for
the final two races. Seventeen boats competed in the event,
coming to host club Fishing Bay Yacht Club from as far away as Knoxville,
Tennessee (Al Williamson). RESULTS (one
throw-out): 1. Rice/Wallio: 1-2-2-1-2-2-3-[5] =
13; 2. Smith/Wintringham: 2-1-3-[13]-3-1-1-4
=15; 3. Beach/Potts: 8-4-1-2-1-[10]-2-2 =
20. PRO: John McCarthy
DATELINE: ATHENS,
GREECE They did it! The USA Men's 470s team
of Paul Foerster and Kevin Burnham won a GOLD MEDAL.
That ringing sound could
be wedding bells: Callinectes skipper, Ben
Cuker, says two crew members, Teresa Berry and
Mark Beebe, who first met on Callinectes, are engaged
and an October wedding is planned. Ben said, "...it was love at first
spinnaker set." Better check those October Fall Series dates,
skipper!
At the Mobjack
Nationals, the 17 skippers ranged in age from 17 to 85 -
now that's a lifetime boat in a lifetime sport.
Another Tropical Storm
Charley update: The YRYC Admiral's Cup, washed
out by Charley, has been re-scheduled and combined with the Seaford Yacht Club
Transbay Race on September 11th. Contact Carl Early (SYC) at (757)
890-2743 or Steve Bowen (YRYC) at (804) 642-4746.
Night Time
Racing: Get out those flashlights that fasten to the rail so you
can check sail trim in the dark, double check your safety equipment
and have the crew check their PFD's, make sure the VHF is
working,
update your charts of the lower Bay, stock up
the galley and cooler, do a full moon dance, and then... go enjoy the
2004 PLANTATION LIGHT RACE, this coming Friday, August 27, through
Saturday, August 28. Organizing authority is Hampton YC.
This is a CBYRA sanctioned event for all PHRF classes.
Entries are due this Thursday, August 26, by 1700
hours. For entry info contact Bob Thomas at
898-9407. Also, this is one of the 5 races that comprise the
Chesapeake Bay Distance Racing Series organized by BBSA. Oh, one other
thing, read the Notice of Race and Sailing Instruction - the words Cape
Charles City lighted buoy, Wolf Trap Light, Back River Entrance, and/or
York Spit Light should not be "foreign" to the skipper,
crew members, and navigator for the night.
If racing under the middle peninsula full moon suits you
better, try the FBYC SMITH POINT RACE which starts on
Saturday afternoon (August 28th) at the
mouth of the Piankatank River and finishes outside Jackson Creek. Starts
for PHRF and MORC classes are expected. You need to read the
FBYC sailing instruction for this one and be familiar with the courses
planned for the different classes. For information on this event
contact Judy Buis or check the FBYC website at www.fbyc.net
The LABOR DAY WEEKEND is coming: Time to get
entries and ressies squared away. See the September Racing Calendar
below for contact numbers.
CBYRA Region 4 Official Scorer, Dick
Boykin, has compiled a "mid-season" standings report (up to and
through the Screwpile Challenge Regatta) for the CBYRA High Point
competition (Southern Division, PHRF). Please note that in order to
receive a CBYRA High Point award, the skipper/owner MUST be a 2004 member of
CBYRA; this unofficial mid-point report does not take into account
membership standing. The boats in first place, and, therefore, with targets on
their transoms, are: PHRF A: Battlewagon
(John Hanna); PHRF B: Cool Change, Rusty
Burshell; PHRF C: Movin' On, Mike Austin; PHRF
NonSpin: No Problem, Ed Andrews. For
info contact Dick Boykin at (757) 890-0093; for CBYRA membership info go
to the CBYRA website www.cbyra.org or call the office at (410)

MURPHY'S LAW: The
Mobjack Nationals, in addition to featuring tough sailors of all shapes, sizes
and ages, had another interesting factoid: One of their sponsors was a
local micro brewery, MOBJACK BEER. The Murphster and several of the racers
taste-tested both flavors. The red may be slightly ahead, but more
extensive testing definitely will be required. Living to race,
racing to live. Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
