From the North Sails
Hampton loft comes word that John Thompson, a North Sails
designer who has been responsible for designing almost all the sails that come
through the loft in Hampton, sustained a horrific injury over
Labor Day Weekend. John was severely hurt while body-surfing at
Rehoboth Beach (Delaware). He was helicoptered to a hospital in Baltimore
and underwent surgery that lasted 15 hours. As of last
Thursday, John was still in the shock trauma ward at the hospital.
If you would like to send John a card, the address is: John Thompson, c/o
Terry Barnes, 9104 Hopewell Road, Easton, MD 21601. Thoughts and
prayers will be welcome too.

chance to get up close to the models. Remote boat racing will happen on
Lake Maury at The Museum. And, to kick off the day, there is a 10K run on

HEADS-UP! The J/29s are coming to Hampton Roads
for their 2004 North American Championships: The time to enter
your J/29 is NOW. If you would like to crew on a great boat in a great one
design championship regatta, line up your ride NOW! If you just want to
watch fast and furious, well sailed boats battle it out with one another, plan
to spectate at the Hampton Roads harbor venue. Racing dates are
October 15, 16, and 17, 2004. Ten races are planned.
Dave and Janice Lively were on the Executive
Cup race course in their Tartan 30, Lively Lady. It's no surprise
that LL finished in the money in the Non-Spin fleet. Not too far "back
in the day" (circa 1992-98), before Dave and Janice took a racing sabbatical,
Lively Lady was tearing up the southern Chesapeake PHRF C
fleet.

"Goodie Bag" takes
on new meaning: Welcome Bags, or Goodie Bags, have long been a
staple of regattas. Event organizers go about the community collecting
trinkets from sponsors to put in a welcome bag which is given to each entrant,
usually at a pre-regatta skippers meeting. Picture this scene:
Skipper goes to recent regatta skippers meeting, collects his goodie bag, takes
it home and tosses it on the living room couch. Wife opens goodie bag to
check out the goodies. She finds two regatta T-shirts, party tickets, and,
oops, ... a bikini top. Yep, it really happened. The rest of
the story is: What really goes on at those welcome bag stuffing
parties?!!
CCV FALL
SERIES: Get ready - CCV Fall Series opens Sunday, September 26,
2004! You do not have to be a member of CCV to race in the
Series, but you do have to enter and you do have to have a valid 2004 PHRF
rating. For info contact: John McCarthy at (757)
850-4225. So, round up the crew, haul out you very best sails,
and maybe take a couple of "test drives" around the venue, before it
becomes time to put it all on the line.
MURPHY'S LAW: The PHRF Non-Spin
fleet may be in some kind of trouble. It's a case of there is
trouble, but there ain't trouble. Bill Barnes sails
Trouble. But wait! Ed Andrews sails No
Trouble. Does that mean we've got double trouble? Either
way, we are in [good] trouble. Living to race,
racing to live. Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
