The Pied Piper of Green Fleet Opti Sailors, Tom Coleman, will be at the USODA Atlantic Coast Championships, October 8-10, at Fishing Bay YC.  Any youngster who is new to Optimist competition will benefit greatly by participating in a Tom Coleman run Green Fleet.  This man has had favorable impact on more junior sailors than can be tallied.  He's a wealth of information for parents and guardians too.  For info contact Noel Clinard at (804) 285-0299.

Take that, IVAN, and your Remnants too!  When Dink Vail Regatta event chairman, J.D. Scott, had to make the call on whether to sail or not on Saturday, he was, of course, contending with the remnants of Hurricane Ivan.  The leftovers from the hurricane provided just the break the racers needed.  With phone tree in place and event participants, race committee, and supporters at the ready, J.D. made the call Saturday, morning at 0700:  "Looks good.  Let's go!"  So, 14 boats slipped out between rain, fog, and wind attacks, got the racing in and slipped back home just before the predicted low hit the area. The "Remnant Racers" enjoyed the post-race gala at host Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and will, no doubt, tell future grandkids about the time they sailed through the remnants of the eye of Ivan.  Overall winner of the regatta was Leo Wardrup's Black Widow, having won by the largest corrected margin over the 2nd place boat in the non-spin class.  RESULTS:  PHRF B: 1.Graham Field, Independence, Islander 36; 2.Mike Nestor, Glory Days, Cal 39; 3.Dave Bouchard, Ganar!, Santana 35.  PHRF C: 1.Mike Casey, Bow Movement, Catalina 27; 2.Bob Archer, About Time, Capri 25.  PHRF Non-Spin: 1.Leo Wardrup, Black Widow, Irwin 38; 2.Larry Bryant, Whisper, Hunter 40; 3.Tom Peddy, Impulse, Catalina 34.  Cruising:  1.Tom Lire, Red Star, Freedom 38; 2.Booty Baker, Klimax, O'Day 38; 3.Nancy Kline, Tailspin, Columbia 26.   PRO: John McCarthy

Schooner Virginia Progress Report:  The expected christening date is December 10th at Norfolk's Waterside.  So... it you want to get a look at her during one of the Friday evening socials that have become an "insider's" event on the Norfolk waterfront, make haste. The last Friday Night Open House will be October 1st, 5:00 pm.  The Schooner Virginia Shipyard is downtown,  just up river of Norfolk's Harbor (baseball) Park.  For info call Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation at (757) 627-7400.

Dock talk has it that a familiar friend from North Carolina will be racing in the CCV Fall Series.  Word is Lloyd Griffin's Cash Flow, Hadley 40,  plans to be in the fray.

Jerry and Andrea Latrell of the Rappahannock River Yacht Club finished 2nd in the recent Flying Scot Capitol District Championships.  20 boats competed in the regatta hosted by Fishing Bay Yacht Club.  David Neff and Allyson Summerfledt (SBSC) won the championship.  10 of the 20 boats sailed out of FBYC.  PRO:  Brooks Zerkel
