onTURKEY ALERT!!
One of the best special regattas on the Bay is just around the corner - THE 9th
ANNUAL TURKEY SHOOT HOSPICE REGATTA FOR CLASSIC SAILBOATS. All
set for October 8-9-10, the Turkey Shoot is a member of the
National Hospice Alliance and the overall winner earns a berth in the National
Hospice Championship Regatta to be held in Spring 2005 in Annapolis. Over
the most recent years, this event has drawn over 100 boats annually and has
become the second largest Hospice regatta in the nation. The only
entry requirement is that the boat's design be at least 25 years old; for
example, Catalina 30s are now classic designs. Festivities begin Friday,
October 8th, and racing is on Saturday-Sunday, October 9th-10th. The entry
fee brings with it a bunch of social ops as well as goodies as well as the
racing. Racing takes place on the Rappahannock River. For info
contact Yankee Point Marina at (804) 462-7018 or go on line at www.yankeepointmarina.com

IVAN Not So Nice to Mid- and Upper Southern
Bay: Reports and recounts are still trickling in on
happenings Saturday before last up the Bay a bit. Evidently, a
couple of fleets got really slammed. Around the Wolf Trap Light area, at least
one boat required assistance and damage was so significant (particularly
sail-wise) that some had to come a ways south to make repairs. Meanwhile,
around Annapolis, winds reached the 44 knots mark and some sailors resorted to
wearing ski masks for protection from the driving rain in order to steer or
trim. Mother Nature in a hissy fit!
Batchelor Finishes 5th in J/22 East Coast
Championships: Southern Bay racer Scott
Batchelor finished 5th overall in the 2004 J/22 East Coast
sailed in Annapolis weekend before this past. Scott had a string of
[11-throw out]-1-5-8-2 for his upper echelon finish in at fleet of 26.
Also sailing out of Hampton, Dave Alexander finished 15th
overall. Kudos to both skippers and their crew.
Regatta Quote of the Weekend: "Well, wait a ----
minute! Let me get back in the boat!" Spoken by a
devoted crewbie who had dived overboard to untangle his boat's rudder from an
anchor rode on the starting line as his skipper was saying, "Hoist the jib,
we got to get going!"
Double congratulations are
in order! Two esteemed members of the racing community are now
directly related to newly arrived twins. Ron McLean,
"main man" on Sledd Shelhorse's Scherherazade, and wife
Kitty, are proud grandparents of twin boys. And,
Dave Gendell, editor of SpinSheet Magazine, and his
wife Chris are proud parents of a girl-boy set of twins.
The twins bring the grandkid count to 3 for the McLeans and the kid count
to 3 for the Gendells. At this rate, Opti stock should be going
up soon!

Alert! Check out the feature article on the 2004 Screwpile
Regatta in the October issue of Sailing
World. Great photos from SpinSheet's Dave
Gendell, one of which includes southern Bay homie,
Scherherazade.
When the J/29 class comes to Hampton Roads for the
2004 J/29 North American Championships, October 15-17,
there will be some well know boats on the line. Defending
National Champion Hustler (John Esposito) will be in town from New
Rochelle, NY. Dirty Harry (John Lavin), sailing out of Warwick,
Rhode Island, will be gunning for the title too. The Chesapeake Bay will
be well represented. Early entries include southern Bay homies,
Ben Week's Rumble, Case Whittemore's
Patriot, and Frank Glawson's Liverpool
Jarge. Maryland early bird entries list Jay Weaver,
Phone, from Oxford, and John and
Linda Edwards' Rhumb Punch, from
Solomons.
One of the highlights of the Turkey Shoot Hospice Regatta is
the special class for restored Chesapeake Skipjacks.
There is no better place to see these beauties in one place, under
sail, at one point in time!
Fall Racing:
Don't forget to make sure your Fleet Flags are in tip-top
condition. Marine supply stores and sail lofts usually
are the best places to procure the flags. Fleet flags make great
winter holiday stocking stuffers, too, but are tough to find as the season draws
to a close. So, buy it now, while the money is in your
hand!
MURPHY'S
LAW: Beware of weight-loss
programs. For boats, this is not a new concept to most
racers. Any race day morning, you can see skippers and
crew engage in BWR (boat weight reduction), as they haul up the
dock all manner of cushions, air conditioners, bags filled with
mysterious gear, old sails, empty bottles, etc. So, now comes
this national propaganda push for PWR (personal weight reduction).
Watch out! If your skipper starts to make noises about this, tell him or
her you are holding out for a one-design 35 footer, where crew weights are a
required way of life, before you begin your PWR plan. Tell El
Skipper the new boat would be a much greater incentive than the fake beer
or breadless sandwiches he's pushing. /S/ Murphy the
Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
