#219 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday October 4, 2004 06:29PM
onFishing Bay YC officials, hosts of the
Opti Atlantic Coast Championships this coming weekend, say they have
over 150 racers registered already. That's terrific news for our
sport. Kudos to the FBYC'ers for getting the word out on their
event. (804) 285-0299
CCV FALL SERIES RACES #3 and #4 are set for this
coming Sunday, October 10th. This is a two race day.
NOTICE: The first signal will be ONE HOUR EARLIER than the
past two race days - FIRST SIGNAL IS AT 1000. Get your phone tree
working on those sleepyheads in your gang!
CCV FALL SERIES RACE #2 - The wind
changed direction more times than a VDOT project plan, but the race came off and
is in the computer. 38 boats charged up the last windward leg as wind
velocity threatened to pick up to meet weather-guessers' expectations of 20
knots. The 20 knots never did show, though. RESULTS: PHRF
A: 1.Sledd Shelhorse, Scherherazade;
2.Sanford Richardson, Kahuna; 3.John
Hanna, Battlewagon. PHRF B: 1.Case
Whittemore, Patriot; 2.Ben Weeks,
Rumble; 3.Neal Garrett, Strega. PHRF
C: 1.Mike Austin, Movin' On; 2.Mike
Veraldi, Quicky; 3.Alan Bomar,
Roundabout. PHRF Non-Spin: 1.Jim Williams,
Checks-in-the-Mail; 2.Andy Armstrong, Virginia H;
3.Jake Brodersen, Midnight Mistress. PRO: John
McCarthy; Mark Boats: Bill Gibbings and Larry Bryant.
J/29 North American Championships FACTOIDS:
There is a New York contingent forming! Joining defending
champion Hustler, John Esposito, from New Rochelle, are Brian and
Kristen Robinson's Wallbanger and Bob
Wardwell's Killshot. Killshot has southern Bay
homie roots, however, that extend back to a "life" at Fishing Bay,
Virginia. And, speaking of the Deltaville area, joining the entries from
Fishing Bay is Paul Andersen's Titillation, the red
J/29 with the all gal crew (usually) that not too long ago graced
the cover of a national sailing magazine and won Key West Race Week. So far,
among current entries to the J/29 North American Championships (Hampton Roads,
October 15-17), the boat with the longest travel distance is Brian Rice's
Rooster Tale, from Fenwick, Ontario.
Mark December 10th on your calendar.
Schooner Virginia will be christened that day at
Norfolk's Waterside. A grand day for southern Bay sailors. Word is
she surely will do the 2005 Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.
So..., she will have her chance to beat the Pride of
Baltimore!
CCV FALL SERIES Standings are
tied in a knot at the halfway point. After 2 races there is a 4
way tie in PHRF A. Each with 5 points and set to square off on next
Sunday's two race day are Battlewagon (John
Hanna), Kahuna (Sanford Richardson),
Scherherazade (Sledd Shelhorse) and Sea Star
(Bumps and Dave Eberwine). In PHRF B a mere 2 points
separate first and second place boats, Ben Weeks'
Rumble (4 points) and Bill Chandler's Rhumb
Line. Mike Austin's Movin' On is crushing
PHRF C, with 2 bullets, but Mike Veraldi (Quicky) and
Bob Archer (About Time) are dead even with 8 points
each going into the final day. There is another one point difference
between first and second places in PHRF Non-Spin. Andy
Armstrong's Virginia H leads with 3 points and Jim
Williams' Checks in the Mail is breathing down the Andy's neck
with a 4 point total. All these close encounters and more will be decided
next Sunday, at the final two races of the CCV Fall Series.
J-24s are now considered Classic Design
sailboats. That means they can sail in this coming weekend's
TURKEY SHOOT HOSPICE REGATTA hosted by Yankee Point Marina on the
Rappahannock River. (804) 462-7018
TRI-SERVICE CUP Regatta turned out 41
non-spin and cruising boats Saturday from the three Hampton Roads area armed
services-related clubs (OPCYC 21, LYC 2, and NNSA 18). Sailing in
and out of fog and dancing around and near thunder squalls, the fleet
raced off Buckroe Beach around established marks. Old Point
Comfort Yacht Club (OPCYC) took the team trophy home, and John
Hardy's Wave Dancer, J/30, was overall winner of the
regatta. CLASS WINNERS: NS1: John
Hardy, Wave Dancer; NS2: Kenneth
Irwin, Southern Style; Cruis1: Juan
Diaz, Sur La Vent; Cruis2: Jay Wright,
Aria; Cruis3: Scott Neilsen,
Artemis. Race Committee Chair: Richard
Payne.

event). Premiere-Racing will manage both events. Check out their web

Media Watch continued:
October issue of Sailing World, in the great article on
Screwpile 2004, also mentioned and pictured Peter Hunter's
Wairere - a "far" southern Bay homie, who sails out of Kill Devil
Hills, North Carolina! Thanks to Jennie Lamonte for the catch of
the unintentional omission attributable to last week's Monday
Morning-itis.
Now, that's commitment: When
"Army" Armstrong (Zephyr) went out Saturday to
race in the Tri-Services Regatta it was his 21st consecutive TS
Regatta. That's got to be at or near the top of some of list of
regatta faithful!
The West Marine Caribbean 1500 is
just around the corner (November 7 departure from Hampton). This will mark
the 15th running of this event. More than 60 boats are expected to
participate and some are already in the area getting ready for the
adventure. For info contact: Cruising Rally Association at (757)
223-5070.
What's in a J/29's Name? Then,
there is Jay Weaver's Phone (Oxford, MD). Jay
said he named his boat Phone, so that whenever clients call his
business, his secretary can honestly tell them he is on the Phone,
without having to say he was actually out sailing!
Twelve 505s battled this past
weekend on Hampton Flats for the Mid-Atlantic Championship title.
Tim Collins and Bill Smith from
Massachusetts won the championship with 16 points over 9 races. Close
behind were Tyler Moore and Steve Sparkman (18
points). Brothers Henry and Doug Amthor finished 3rd (32
points).
ANNAPOLIS IN-THE-WATER SAILBOAT
SHOW: Opens this Thursday,
October 7 (VIP Day) and runs through Monday, October 11th. If
you've never done it, ya gotta do it. If you've done it before, do it
again. A true sailors' happening! (410) 267-6711
Southern Bay Traveling
Squad! Mike Veraldi's Quicky
team plans to head up to the J/24 East Coast Championships in
Annapolis later this month. Also, Pam Burdett and the Polar
Express bunch are set for the Chesapeake Bay
J/105 Championships (host - Eastport YC, Annapolis) October 23-24.
Keep your fingers and toes crossed for our southern Bay homies.
SPINSHEET MAGAZINE, COBB'S MARINA (Norfolk),
and WEST MARINE (Hampton) are among those helping make the
J/29 2004 North American Championships (October 15-17) a
success. (Hampton YC is hosting the event.)
Here is something all racing
sailors got to have - a performance boat shoe named the
Figawi ! The company marketing the shoe says it is just
like the shoes the Navy Seals wear. How can anyone mess
with a bunch of crewbies who are "empowered" by this kind of foot
wear?! It's scary just thinking about it.
Let your artistic talent shine - but,
shine right now! HOSPICE CUP XXIV organizers are looking for a design
that will become the official artwork for next year's Hospice Cup. The
deadline for submissions is this OCTOBER 14th. Contact Pam Cann
(202) 289-1812.
MURPHY'S LAW:
Figawi, Bow-Wowi. What is this nonsense about seals wearing boat
shoes?! First they try to act like us canines with the barking bit.
Now they are gonna put shoes on those foolish looking flippers?! What next
- a place on the rail? I think not. Seals are made to swim, only
racing beagles are made to trim! /S/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
