CCV FALL SERIES CHAMPS!
SCHERHERAZADE, RUMBLE, MOVIN' ON, and CHECKS-IN-THE-MAIL.
Racing most of the day in a front driven breeze that stayed
between 18 and 20 knots, 40 boats went after CCV Fall Series final awards in two
races. Wind from the NNW progressively shifting NE made for serious
whitecaps and cool, but sunny, conditions. Preliminary series
results: PHRF A: 1.Scherherazade, Sledd Shelhorse
(4-1-2-1); 2.Sea Star, Bumps and David
Eberwine (1-4-1-5); 3.Kahuna, Sanford
Richardson (3-2-8-2). PHRF B: 1.Rumble, Ben
Weeks (2-2-2-2); 2. Cool Change, Rusty
Burshell (4-4-1-1); 3.Rhumb Line, Bill
Chandler (1-5-5-3). PHRF C: 1.Movin' On,
Mike Austin (1-1-2-2); 2.Quicky, Mike Veraldi
(6-2-1-1); 3.About Time, Bob Archer (3-5-5-6). PHRF
Non-Spin: 1.Checks-in-the-Mail, Jim Williams (3-1-2-1);
2.Virginia H, Andy Armstrong (1-2-4-2); 3.Midnight
Mistress, Jake Brodersen (4-3-7-3). PRO: John

2004 J/29 NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS - October
15-17 - Hampton, Virginia:
Yet another Chesapeake Bay
J/29, Sam Marshall's Night Music sailing out of Fishing Bay
YC, has joined the entries for the 2004 J/29 North
Americans to be sailed near Hampton Flats this coming
weekend. And, from south of the Chesapeake comes
Rockette, sailed by Chuck Monsees'
team, who are very recent winners of the Pamlico Hospice Regatta.
For J/29 racers, check-in and crew
weigh-in is October 14, Thursday (5 pm - 8 pm). This is a
one-design continental championship and class rules limit the total crew
(including skipper) weight to 1500 pounds. It'll be lettuce and other
bunny food until Thursday's showdown with the scales, and after that, "Katy, bar
the door [and the buffet]!" Racing begins Friday morning and goes through
Sunday. Race organizers plan for 10 races over the 3 days starting at 10
am each day.
Need shrimp ?! Contact any
member of the Sea Star crew. They were seen
catching a few at a certain leeward mark rounding yesterday.
Quicky (Mike Veraldi and top
notch crew) tuned up for the upcoming J/24 East Coast
Championships later this month by taking two bullets in PHRF C in
yesterday's CCV races.
Singlehanders DO get a second
chance! The 2004 SINGLEHAND RACE, originally
scheduled for Sunday, September 19th, but blown away by too much wind, has been
rescheduled for Sunday, October 24, 2004. The event is
hosted by HYC. For additional information, contact Kathy Brady at (757)
723-3244.
Hampton Roads local boat, Rumble, skippered by
Ben Weeks, worked out yesterday for the J/29
North Americans by winning the CCV Fall Series in the highly
competitive PHRF B fleet. Rumble took 4 second places, while
three other boats shared the first places in each race. One of the boats
grabbing a first in the series was Case Whittemore's
Patriot, another J/29, racing out of Fishing Bay/Deltaville.
Patriot will join Rumble and 11 other J/29's this coming
weekend in some fast and furious one-design racing off Hampton
Flats.
Southern Bay Young Racer on the Rise:
College of Charleston sailing team standout Blake
Kimbrough will be team captain this collegiate year.
Charleston is currently 10th in the national coed rankings. Blake did his
youth sailing at Fishing Bay Yacht Club.
Another Etching for your November-December
stone calendar: NOVEMBER 12 - Friday evening - CCV Awards
Party and Year End Bash. DECEMBER 4 - CBYRA Annual General
Meeting at Gibson Island Club.
From an "extended southern Bay homie"
whose racing roots were established in Hampton Roads as a
bowman on high point winners in PHRF A and C fleets, Chris
Pope, comes word of his first win at the "big boat" helm. He is
sailing an Islander 30, My Girl, out of Pasqoutank Yacht
Club. He won one of the two races at the Edenton Peanut
Festival Regatta. Chris, his wife Licia, and their 3 boys make their
home in Shawboro, North Carolina. Could be another jump
in those Opti stock options!

MURPHY'S
LAW: So, these J/29 racers, a special lot in and of
themselves, really are going to do this official weigh-in thing. Well, in
the process of getting my fine body ready for the public weigh-in, I have
blown out two rubber-plastic suits (sold only on TV for $19.99 plus
Shipping and Handling)! So..., don't expect to see me on the scales
at the weigh-in. I'm going straight to the party.
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
