for tardiness!
ELUSION,
Kirt Schuldt at the helm, crossed the finish line first in the staggered start
ROUND THE LIGHTS RACE, sponsored annually by Old Point Comfort Yacht

YIKES! The
Frostbite Series begins this Sunday, October 31. This is the
first of 5 races run on consecutive Sundays through November 28th. Racing
takes place in Hampton Roads harbor using CCV harbor marks. Entries are
due at 1200 hours THE DAY BEFORE THE RACE. You can save considerable $$$
by entering the entire series ($60/$50 USSA) as opposed to $25/$20 race by
race. Starts for all PHRF classes as well as a cruising
fleet. First warning signal is at 1100. Except for the
cruising fleet, a PHRF valid certificate is required, although PHRF crew
limitations will not apply. For info contact Dick Boykin at (757)
890-0093.
To Fiddlers'
Green: Rob Pierce (1963 - 2004). Sorry to report that we
have lost one of our racers, Rob Pierce, to leukemia. The illness took him
quickly. Rob was involved with a number of racing programs during his time with
us, including the years he skippered Wild Rose in PHRF
A. Recently, he purchased Orange Blossom Special with
plans to repair and reactivate her in the southern Bay racing scene. Rob
served as commodore of CCV in 1996. Our thoughts and prayers go to his
wife, Karen, and three children, Kristen, Kenneth, and Stephen. Donations
may be made in Rob's name to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, 5511 Staples Mill
Road, Suite 105, Richmond, VA 23228.
The 2004 Chesapeake Bay Great Schooner Race
hit really bad weather week before last and the numbers show just how
difficult it is to make good progress, especially to windward, in one
of those lovely ladies in blue stink conditions. As Bill Mellen put it,
"The race started with low wind, then no wind, then way too much of the wrong
wind." Finishers experienced gusts up to 35 knots on the nose. Here
are the numbers: There were 37 schooners entered in four classes. Of
those, 29 started, 13 finished (16 were DNF), and 8 chose not to start.
CLASS WINNERS: AA: Pride of Baltimore, Jan
Miles; A: Woodwind, Ken & Ellen
Kaye; B: Heron NJ, Robert
Pulsch; C: Malabar, James
Lobdell.
FBYC AUTUMN RACES, (Sunday) November 7 and
(Saturday) November 13. Two 2-race days - all races will be
inside Fishing Bay. Starts for PHRF Spin, PHRF Non-Spin, and MORC

For info contact Randy Alley at (804) 233 - 0824.
Ben Cuker, Callinectes, finished
first among the 5 hardy souls who tackled the HYC Singlehanded
(makeup) Race Sunday in light air and under gray
skies.
LIGHTNINGS WILL STRIKE, November 6-7.
HYC will host the two day Lightning Fling the first weekend of
November. These are great 3 person boats that are great to sail and great
to watch, especially in a bit of a blow. For info, contact Leigh
Morgan at (757) 726-9640.
The Constellation is on the
move! Navy folks and sailors in general may want to find their
way to Annapolis tomorrow, Tuesday, October 26, for this maritime
happening. The Sloop of War Constellation is going to
Annapolis to participate in the USNA 2004 Homecoming. The float
plan has her passing under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at 1400 and alongside the
Naval Academy seawall (starboard side to) at 1545. This will be the first time
since 1955 that the Constellation has left Baltimore.
SAVE $5 per person by making your ressies by Sunday,
October 31, to the 2004 CCV Awards Party and Year End Bash (Friday,
November 12). Everyone is invited. You do not have to be a
member of CCV to have a great evening with the southern Bay's racing tribe.

MURPHY'S
LAW: So, the schooner Virginia is pulling her crew
together. Twelve of the human beongus persuasion will be
tapped for an experience of a lifetime. One of the major
tasks on the Virginia's plate is to beat The Pride [of
Baltimore] in the 2005 Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. I expect
to hear from the captain early on, because he will want a hearty racing
beagle at his side for nipping the crew into racing shape and snoozing on
the odd halyard tail. /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing
spirit in us all.
