Frostbite Race #3 - Same
time, same place, next Sunday, November 13.
Most Moth sailors who know
Mark Saunders, the 2004 Classic Moth National Champion, don't think of him as,
well... space-y. How about this: The Virginian Pilot
recently reported that Mark, a NASA engineer, has an asteroid named for
him. Mark is only the 3rd engineer in Langley's history to be so honored
and it was "...for his work on three space exploration missions, including Mars
Pathfinder," the Pilot article said.
Lightnings and Lasers
flash near Strawberry Banks! Eight Lightning teams went at it
Saturday and Sunday, 5 races and 3 races respectively, and Ed Muchels
(Edgewater, MD) came away the winner. Nabeel Alsalam (McLean, Va) was 2nd,
and local racer, Joe Buczkowski was third.
Henry Amthor won the 5 boat Laser fleet that raced on Saturday
only. Brian McEur (ODU) was 2nd, and Bill
Warren from Williamsburg was 3rd.
Caribbean 1500 Holds on
Start: Momma Nature is throwing a hissie fit off shore right now,
and Carib 1500 organizers are watching the developments closely. Of most
concern is the northeast wind vs the Gulf Stream - now that's current
against wind! Word is 24 foot+ waves are likely. But, then there is
the strange mix of trouble to the southeast that some predictors are saying may
result, if they had started Sunday as planned, in as long as 96
hours of hard going, i.e. 40 to 50 knots, once the rally group is well into the
trip. Looks now like they may start this coming Wednesday, probably not
before.
J/24 Fleet 71 is getting
down to it - their final day of racing for their season series will be this
coming Saturday, November 13th. For info contact Chris Duer at (757)
638-4825.
If you want to check out
some beautiful sailboats close by and for free - the
stroll along the docks is free, not the boats - stop by Bluewater Yachting
Center and look at the Caribbean 1500 (flying pink rally flags)
entries. There are 50 boats there that will knock your Topsiders off!
It's better than a boat show and right in Hampton Roads. BYC is at
the intersection of Hampton River and Sunset Creek. For by land directions
call (757) 723-6774.
Speaking of Caribbean 1500
participants - yesterday, 8-10 of them were snapped up by skippers
racing in Frostbite #2. They had barely gotten out of the BYC water taxi,
before every one was shanghaied for the race. A nice diversion while
they waited for off shore weather to clear and a nice opportunity for local
folks to meet the visitors.
Believe it or not, it is time for clubs to get together their
racing schedules for 2005. Same is true of one-design
classes, junior programs, etc. Responsible officials need to begin
preliminary work now - don't wait.
HOLIDAY GIFTS FOR SAILORS - SpinSheet
Magazine is soliciting gift ideas and comments from sailors for
their December issue. Here's your chance to "get the word out" on what
you want for Christmas! What piece of sailing-related
gear, clothing, etc. do you wish for yourself (or your boat) or would you
recommend as a gift? Send your gift idea and comments about
why you want it along with your full name, homeport, type/name of
boat (or indicate the type of sailing you do, if your are boatless), and club
affiliation directly to Jane@spinsheet.com But,
HURRY! Submissions are due by this Wednesday, November
10th.
Remember Teresa Berry and Mark Beebe, who met
while crewing on Ben Cuker's Callinectes, and became engaged to
marry. Well, wed they did. The happy couple tied the knot
October 23rd, AFTER the CCV Fall Series was complete!
Right here in our southern Bay midst is a
truly outstanding collegiate champion. ANNA
TUNNICLIFFE, sailing for the Old Dominion University team, has won her
third straight Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Women's
Singlehanded North American Championship. Anna is the
first three time winner of this prestigious award.
MURPHY'S
LAW: So, the 2004 National Champion of the Classic Moth Class
(Mark Saunders) is a rocket scientist and has a heavenly body named after
him. So what?! I, Murphy, am a Racing
Beagle, and have a body of water, the Beagle Strait , named after
me. Who's da man now, dawg?! /S/ Murphy the
Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
