onThe schooner Virginia
was launched and christened last week in Norfolk. A heart
warming presence among the notables attending was Gary
Jobson, one of the special invited guests at the christening.
Also, adding special words and thoughts at the christening was Bill
Pinkney, former Master of the Amistad
America. There were several local racers at the christening
Friday, including, but not limited to, Larry Bryant, Don Wade, Ben
Cuker, and Thom Thornton. And, of course
Governor Mark Warner and his wife, Lisa Collis, who actually christened the
Virginia, were top officials in attendance.
Racers' Financial
Advisory: Keep in mind that the beginning of the year is when you
want to get your 2005 dues and fees paid for the coming season. The main
memberships you'll need to take care of are:
CCV
(racing membership, includes entry fees for 10 of the 11 CCV High
Point races, $110/$125, OR club membership $25); CBYRA
(Adult , $35); PHRF ($35 includes valid PHRF rating
certificate); USSAILING (Adult $50). Usually these
organizations publish application and renewal forms in January. Watch future
issues of SBRNYCU for detailed info on why you need to join these
particular groups.
The Hampton One Design
Class in particular and sailing in general has lost well known and
much appreciated racer Bill Dougherty to Fiddler's Green.
Bill died December 4, 2004, following complications from surgery to remove
a cancerous tumor. In a report to HOD class members Latane
Montague explained that Bill had traveled to New Orleans for the procedure and
never regained consciousness after the surgery. Latane forwarded
information from Bill's sister saying Bill wished to have his ashes
scattered on Hampton Creek and that there will be a memorial service in
mid-January in Hampton for him.

There's a new dog on the racing scene.
Sadie is the official mascot of the SUNSET GRILL located on the
first deck of Willoughby Harbor Marina at the tip end of Willoughby
Spit. Sadie, a Jack Russell terrier, is easily recognizable
these days because she is sporting a racer's red knit sweater - holiday
spirit, ya know. Here's the deal: This coming Saturday,
December 18, 2pm to 6pm, Sadie and the humans she supervises, will host a
holiday Open House at the Grill. They will be collecting items for
Toys For Tots. So, take yourself by, wish your sailing
buddies a Merry Christmas, and, if you can, leave a toy or a donation for Toys
for Tots. For detailed directions or info, call the Grill at (757)
588-1255.

MURPHY'S
LAW: Scuttlebutt (issue #1727, Dec 9, 04) mentioned
that Ellen MacArthur, in her quest for the solo circumnavigation record,
recently encountered "...the Royal Navy's frigate HMS Iron
Duke..." on the high seas and that " ...the ships company came out on
deck to cheer and wave." So, what's the big deal? Plenty of us
southern Bay racers, especially in the Hampton Roads area, have had
the experience of encountering big gray Navy ships. And, many have
received more than a mere wave... try several horn blasts and even
a "promised" frogman team boarding. Now that's a "hello"!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
