#231 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

RACING DATES to keep in mind when you begin "negotiations" with your boatyard work scheduler:
Here are some early Southern Bay 2005 Racing Dates:   CCV Racing Tune-up races are set for Sunday, April 10th.  The CCV Spring Series dates are April 17 (Race #1); April 24 (Race #2); and May 15 (Races #3 and #4).  All the CCV racing is on a Sunday.  In the Region 4 Northern Division, spring activity at Fishing Bay YC begins on April 23 -24 (Opening Day and Spring Series 1); FBYC Spring Series continues with Spring 2 (May 1); Spring 3 (May 14); and, Spring 4 (May 21).   Rappahannock River RC runs their Spring Regatta 1 on April 30 and the Yankee Point YC Spring Regatta is on May 7.  With the exception of the CCV Tune-Up races, these are all CBYRA sanctioned races.
Winters Sail Loft to relocate:  Dan and Sam Winters and son Brett will be moving the loft soon, but they are not going far - just across the street from their current location.  In February, Winters Sail Loft will move across East Queens Way, Hampton,  to next door to the Marker 20 deck, and on the FIRST floor (no more long climbs to the third floor).  Hopefully, the Winters will remember to bring the famous Christmas punch bowl to the new loft.  Many a sailors' tall racing tale, enhanced by "holiday spirits", is nestled in that holiday punch bowl!  The number at the new location will remain the same  - (757) 722-5711.

Racing Fleet - Some on the Hard:  So, far most of the fleet is staying close to  home slips, although some are up and drying out.  Among the snug as bugs are: Craig Olsen's Namesake (Olson 30, PHRF A), currently stored on the HYC dry storage lot; Cyrano, Bob Mosby's Frers 36 A-fleeter, high and dry at Cobb's Boatyard  in Norfolk;  Bob Archer's newly acquired  Bad Habit (Pearson Flyer, B Fleet), on the hard in the Bluewater Yachting Center yard; and Dana Dillon's Catalina 30 Amarylyn (C Fleet) up at the Bell Isle Marina.  Amarylyn enjoys the highest level of security - the Langley AFB fighters have a secure air cap over her.  Stay tuned for further reports from the Boatyard Prowler.

Lauderdale to Key West start is this Wednesday, Jan 12:     Sanford Richardson's Farr 395, Kahuna, and Othmar von Blumencron's Dame Blanche (Beneteau 40.7) will start the Lauderdale to Key West  Race on this Wednesday prior to hitting the fray at KWRW (Jan 21 -25).  Christian Schaumloffel's Hobie 33 Mirage (A Fleet) also is going via highways and byways to Lauderdale for the 30th rendition of the Lauderdale Yacht Club sponsored event.

RACING RULES SEMINAR, Saturday, JANUARY 29, hosted by Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.  This seminar is designed around understanding concepts rather than memorizing rules. Skippers and crew alike will benefit from the interactive format and lively discussion.  Course instructor is John McCarthy.  To register call NY&CC (ask for Shannon) at (757) 423-4500.  The seminar is open to all and the price is right, $15 includes lunch and break refreshments.  Questions or additional info, contact Lin at (757) 850-4225

There's a stranger in our midst:  Tucked into the center of Bell Isle Marina storage yard is a nice little J/80.  Looks like she is there for the winter duration.  Maybe a potential B-fleeter?

Region 4 Club Racing Beginning dates:  OPCYC is the early bird, starting their season long program on April 2.  HYC begins their Wednesday Night racing on April 6, and the following week, BBSA cranks up Wednesday Nights at Little Creek (April 13) and Thursday Nights at Willoughby (April 14).  York River YC begins their Wednesday Night races on April 20 and Portsmouth Boat Club starts the barnacle races on Friday May 6.

J/29-ers please note!  Significant Southern Bay Schedule Change:  An annual favorite for J/29 racers is the FBYC J/29 Invitational which, in the past, has been held in the Spring.  Please be aware that the 2005 J/29 Invitational Regatta is set for October 14 - 16, at FBYC.

2005 CCV Racing Guide:  The CCV Racing Guide is distributed at the annual CCV Racing Rules Seminar, which has now been set for Tuesday, April 5, a Tuesday evening, at The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, VA.  Racers will be in for a special treat this year.  CCV will have Gary Bodie as the guest speaker.

MURPHY'S LAW:  All the talk about Lauderdale to Key West and Key West Race Week warms a racing beagle's soul... and miscellaneous body parts too!  Makes any winter chilled racer feel as toasty as a hot toddy in a fleece huggy.    /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
