#232 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday January 17, 2005 12:11PM
onThere are 2 Virginia and 6 North Carolina
homeported boats at Key West Race Week: Mike
Karn's G&S 27, Insatiable, (Deltaville) and
Sanford Richardson's Farr 395, Kahuna (Hampton)
make up the small Virginia contingent. Registered from the Tarheel
state are Walter Kennedy's Henderson 30, Savannah;
Lloyd Griffin's Hadley 40, Cash Flow;
McAllister and Silver's JS 9000, A Lil Tipsy;
Peter Hunter's Thompson 30, Wairere; the Robin
Team J/80 Sweet Baby J; and Worth Harris'
J/105, Rum at Six. From a "sort of reliable" source (the
check-in parties had begun) comes a report (unconfirmed) that Cash
Flow suffered some hurt during transport (via land) and that repairs
were being assessed. Keep your fingers crossed for the gang on the
Green Machine.
It's Monday morning. As
you read this they are racing at Key West Race Week! You are
probably at your J-O-B earning moolah to support your racing habit. Like
the song says, sometimes you're the windshield; sometimes you're the
bug!
Congratulations
to MIRAGE, Christian Schaumloffel's Hobie 33 - First overall
in the Lauderdale to Key West Race! Christian Schaumloffel and
the Mirage crew completed the 160 mile dash down the coast of Florida
in just under 18 hours with a corrected time of 7:47:53.
Mirage finished first in her class and, more significantly, first
overall in the 28 boat monohull fleet. One other southern Bay boat,
Sanford Richardson's Farr 395, Kahuna, did well in her
class, finishing 2nd in Class B, but 20th overall on corrected time.
Register now for the RACING RULES SEMINAR, Saturday,
January 29, 9:00 am, hosted by Norfolk Yacht & Country
Club. For skippers as well as crew, the
course emphasizes understanding concepts rather than memorizing
rules. Course instructor is John McCarthy. The $15
cost includes lunch as well as refreshments during breaks. To register
call Shannon at NY&CC at (757) 423-4500 or Lin McCarthy at (757)
850-4225.
2005 CBYRA Region 4 Handicap Racing Schedule is
complete! Region 4 yacht club, sailing association,
and event officials who participated in the process deserve a big "thank
you". The schedule (in two separate listings, North Division and South
Division) has been sent electronically to each club in the Region and to
Annapolis for publication in the CBYRA Greenbook. It of course will be
published in the 2005 CCV Racing Guide (due out April 5,
2005).
Schooner Virginia Update: Word is
the two Chiefs of State, the Governor of Maryland and the Governor of the
Commonwealth of Virginia, are working out details on a match race
challenge between Virginia and the Pride of
Baltimore. The event would help raise funds for the
Chesapeake Bay Foundation in addition to casting a favorable spotlight on
Virginia and her home State. Rumors say it is very likely
Gary Jobson and Ted Turner will be "guest"
helmsmen for the event. Southern Bay racers should begin to collect
humbles for the pie our schooner is sure to serve those
Marylanders!
Another J/30 on the southern Bay: Now
there are 3 J/30s on the York River. Brian Gregory has
brought hull #22 into the nest. That makes 3 at York River Yacht Club -
Brian joins Mike Mastracci and John
Boon. And, there are 3 racing regularly in Hampton
Roads, John Hardy (OPCYC), Rusty Burshell and Dave
McConaughy (both HYC). And, there are others that race
sporadically. Could this be a chance for some
one-designing?
Boatyard Beat: Sledd
Shelhorse's 2004 CCV High Point Champion Scherherazade is up
in Irvington at Rappahannock Yacht getting a beauty treatment. She will be
"absolutely stunning, Dawling!" when she comes out to defend her title in
2005.
Dave Bettis will introduce Boo
Nasty, his recently acquired Ranger 33, to the southern Bay racing
fleet this coming spring. Dave crews on Karl and Senta
Petersen's NY36, Valkyrie, and has honored the Petersen
household cat by choosing part of her name, Boo Nasty Trick Daddy, for his
boat. Bettis said he plans to break in Boo Nasty in
Willoughby on Thursday Nights and to do some of the non-sanctioned races in
2005, while staying on the Valkyrie team for the sanctioned
and high point stuff.
At Saturday's Old Dominion University NCAA televised
basketball game, something special to racing sailors happened.
There at mid-court, with more than 6,000 hoops fans applauding, stood three
time Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's Singlehanded North American
Champion, Anna Tunnicliffe, with ODU head
sailing coach Mitch Brindley and ODU Athletic Director
Jim Jarrett. Anna received her championship
trophy and the sport of sailing got some very public recognition.
Kudos to the ODU athletic administration!

MURPHY'S
LAW: Before he got into the athletic shoe business, NIKE
was best known as the god of victory. Here may be an idea whose time
has come. Don't we need a specialty god of sailboat racing? Perhaps
we could name our guru SPERRY or HI-TOP CONVERSE, god of sailboat race
victories! Racers depend on racing gear and, of course, footwear is doubly
important to the Murphster! Think about it. /S/ Murphy the
Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
