#237 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday February 21, 2005 08:48PM
onTomorrow is President
George Washington's birthday. He was our first President. He was
also our first racing bowman - picture him standing in the bow while crossing
the Delaware.
MIRAGE finishes
2nd in class at the St. Pete NOOD: Christian Schaumloffel and the
crew of Mirage, finished 2nd in the 7 boat Hobie 33 one design class
racing this past weekend at the St Petersburg NOOD Regatta. Over the three
days of racing, our homies amassed a string of 2-2-2-2 (day 1), 1-5 (day 2), and
5-5 (day 3). Juan Mauri (Texas) dominated the Hobie 33 fleet with 7
bullets and one 2nd place - the blemish on his near perfect string
came from our homies on day 2. The other southern Bay boat at the St Pete
event, Dennis Hannick's Radio Flyer, finished 7th
among 9 in the Tripp 26 class.
Deadline
for 2005 CCV Racing Guide:
If you want to be sure your name is listed in the membership
section, your event circular / NOR is included, and/or your advertisement is in
the hands of the racing community in the southern Chesapeake Bay, you
better get on the proverbial stick - get your info to the proper person by
close of business tomorrow, February 22. Advertisement
copy should go to Justin Morris (286-4750); race circulars and notices of race
to Lin McCarthy (850-4225); and membership applications to Tom Peddy
(651-6804). This is probably the most important publication
deadline in the southern Bay - best not to miss it.
US Match Racing
Championship for the Prince of Wales Trophy: The Area C
Quarter Finals will be hosted at Hampton YC on May 21-22, 2005.
This is championship level match racing.
Six 3- person teams will
compete in J-24's (the boat's rep will be on board as well) at
the HYC regatta. Teams are selected to sail in this prestigious event by
the US Sailing committee. Teams interested in participating in the Quarter
Finals should submit a team resume to the Organizing Authority at matchracing@ussailing.org
no later than March 15, 2005. The Area ABC Semi Finals
are set for July 16-17 (in Annapolis) and the Finals will be at Newport Beach,
California, September 21-24, 2005. Southern Bay top dog racers - get those
team résumés together and give it a shot!
Quotable
Quote: Referring to the NOOD Regatta organizers' offer of an
accommodation package for each NOOD event overall winner for a week of racing at
the first time ever NOOD Caribbean Rendezvous in January
2006. Alan Bomar says he is sure that hosting
Sunsail Club Colanna (Antigua) "...has had lots of NUDE Caribbean Rendezvous
before." (Ask Alan directly for verification!)
Sledd Shelhorse's
Scherherazade is out of the shed at Rappahannock Yachts after having a
general spiffy-ing job done (mainly on her decks) and along the way she acquired
a new name. Same teal green, but look for Meridian
on her transom. Meridian will remain at
Rappahannock Yachts until closer to spring racing, snuggly bound in shrink
wrap!
Favorites among the
J29 fleet, Chuck Monsees'
Rockette and his crew, are planning to be racing
on the southern Bay circuit in 2005. Welcome!
Trouble in the
racing fleet: Bill Barnes has purchased a Beneteau 463 and he's
looking to get her out on the course this spring. Her name, like his
previous boat, is Trouble, and she has seen duty in one of the islands
cruising fleets.
Kudos to the J24
Fleet 71 for generosity as well as flexibility. A number of the
Fleet 71 owners are allowing their boats to be used in the up coming US
Match Racing Championship Regatta for the Prince of Wales Trophy
(qualifier regatta) to be hosted at Hampton YC the weekend of May
21-22. In addition, Fleet 71 moved their Spring Regatta to May 28th.
Acts of vision for the good of our sport!
Miami Race Week 2005,
previously known at SORC, is cranking up and shows all signs of
becoming another great regatta for winter-bound racers. It is run by the
same group that runs Key West Race Week, Premiere Racing. At this point
there are more than 130 boats registered, but few are from the southern
Bay. Some familiar "Tarheel homie" names include J105 Rum at Six
(Harris/Baggett/Brown - Beaufort, NC), Etchells USA 1299
(R. White/J. Flup - Oriental, NC), J80 Sweet Baby
J (Robin Team - Beaufort, NC) and from Virginia,
Melges 24 Carloan.com (Travis Weisleder -
Richmond). Dock Talk word is that Frank Silver will be
there in either his JS9000 (A Lil' Tipsey) or his other speed chariot,
the B25. The JS9000 lost her rig prior to racing at KWRW and a replacement
is due in Hampton any minute.
MARCH
CALENDAR: Get on your boatyard's splash schedule - no one wants to be last
in the water and last to start practicing!
(Insert "bottom prep,
winch cleaning, and wet sanding" on every sunny, windless

MURPHY'S
LAW: Happy Birthday, President Washington! I sure
hope none of our present day bowmen want to have sabers with them like the
one GW had while crossing the Delaware! Think of the number of
headstays and halyards that could fall victim to a careless swipe. And,
what about other crew members. The shout "Heads Up!" would take on
a whole new meaning - depending on whether the holler went out before or
after the swipe! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the
sailing spirit in us all.
