REMINDER: If you intend to race in a PHRF fleet in 2005, you MUST have
a 2005 VALID PHRF CERTIFICATE. The 2004 version does
not get it; even 2004 certificates issued late in that year expire
prior to the start of the 2005 season in the southern
Chesapeake. Get your 2005 valid certificate NOW!
Time's a'wasting.
2005 Black Seal -
Southern Bay Race Week CBYRA qualifier for US SAILING Offshore
Championship: Word comes from CBYRA US Sailing delegate Joe
Krolak, that the 2005 BSC-SBRW Regatta will be a CBYRA qualifier event for
the very prestigious USSA Offshore Championship for the Lloyd
Phoenix Trophy. The finals for this competition among keel
boat crews from each of the 10 US SAILING Areas will be held this year in
Annapolis at the US Naval Academy. Sledd Shelhorse and
his crew from Promises won the whole darn shootin' match in
1983. Most of the members of that crew are still with Sledd and sailing on
Meridian (aka Scherherazade).
Skip Amory
has his J/105 registered and ready for the 2005 season. Woof,
whose graphics sport one of Murphy, The Racing Beagle's kindred, a Westie,
is a favorite of many racing graphic design
aficionados.
SPINSHEET
Magazine has signed on as a sponsor for the up coming
USODA (OPTI) Nationals to be hosted this July by Norfolk Yacht
and Country Club. Racers can put one more notch in the area sponsor totem
for SpinSheet. They are a part of most notable regatta's in our
area including the Little Creek Cup, Black Seal Cup - Southern Bay
Race Week, and of course, one we have large contingent attending,
Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge. SpinSheet has been
and continues to be the Chesapeake Bay sailors', and
especially racers', good friend.
Media Watch:
SCUTTLEBUTT (number 1783) readers no doubt saw the lead article about
southern Bay homie Linda Lindquist-Bishop of Yorktown,
Virginia, who is the pit on Farr 40 World Champion, Barking
Mad. Kudos
go to the Daily Press newspaper too, for
having published the article about Lindquist-Bishop on February 15th.
You can read the whole article on the DP website at www.dailypress.com. Too bad the
website has the article under a big "AUTORACING" header.
Maybe, when you call to thank the DP for paying attention to a world class racer
in our midst, you could put in a reasoned word about the benefits to
the paper of starting a "SAILING" sub-section on a regular basis in
their sports section.
New to PHRF C and J24
Fleet 71: Dave Taylor has his "previously owned" J/24 in Hampton
and is getting her ready to go. Dave is a computer literate kind of guy -
he lists the name of the boat as @#$%&!!!.
What's it mean, Dave, and can we
say it in polite company? Or, can we say it only in company of
racers? Enquiring minds want to know. Dave used to race
Insolvent in the PHRF non-spin fleet.
Blue Water Racers: The 2005
Annapolis to Newport Race officials have posted the Notice of
Race. The NOR calls for the first start to go at high
noon, Friday, June 10. There's lots of activity in Annapolis days
prior to the race. The race is 473 miles from Annapolis to Castle Hill
Light House at the entrance of Newport Harbor. Go on line to www.race.annapolisyc.org/newport05
for entry forms and info. Deadline for entries is May 30,
2005.
Blue Water Wannabes - special opportunity to
test your desire: The 2005 Round DelMarVa 400 Cruising
Rally is set for June 4-12. The rally convenes and starts in Annapolis and
goes south to Hampton and then goes counter clockwise around the Delmarva
Peninsula, returning to Annapolis. For info, contact Jim Favors at
(410) 353-7770. There already are 20 some boats registered and
chomping at the bit.
USSAILING Race Management
Course: Thirty-three folks attended the day long US SAILING
Basic Race Management Course hosted by Rappahannock River Yacht Club in
Irvington, VA, on Saturday. Among those attending were sailors from
Northern Neck and Gloucester clubs RRYC, Yankee Point YC, Fishing Bay YC, Ware
River, and York River YC along with contingents from Norfolk Yacht
& CC and Broad Bay Sailing Association (Virginia Beach). John
McCarthy was instructor assisted by Jerry Latell.
MURPHY'S
LAW: The weather on the Bay is blowing a blue stink this
morning. As a racing beagle, I am serving notice on that darned
Groundhog: Pull another stunt like this, and you will learn the hard
way that I have not lost my other Beagle skills - this dog DOES hunt!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
