#239 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday March 7, 2005 11:45PM
onDon't be caught with your
PHRF cert down! You must have a valid 2005 PHRF rating certificate
to race in sanctioned (as well as many other) events. Check the
expiration date on any special or provisional rating you may have
obtained late in the 2004 season; chances are it will not cover you for the 2005
season.
SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK 2005: The
organizing committee is hard at work on this year's rendition of this great
event set for June 3-4-5. 2005 Event Chairman Leigh Morgan says the
"big boat" fleet can expect the venues to remain in the same locations as last
year - the PHRF A, B and C Spinnaker fleets and One-Design classes
will race off Ocean View (Willoughby Bank), and the PHRF Non-Spinnaker and
Cruising classes will sail off the Buckroe Beach area.
Acura Miami Race Week 2005 opens this coming
Thursday, March 10. And, there will be some southern Bay
homies there. Frank Silver along with Ken
Saylor, will have the JS9000, A Lil 'Tipsy, on the line.
Reliable sources say Fred Sage will be on a Palm Beach J/24,
Pick Up Styx, and Les Crane, a southern Bay expatriate
who grew up in Hampton, will be on one of the Etchells, John Deere,
from Slocum, RI. Early registrants from the Tarheel State include J/105
Rum at Six (Harris/Baggett/Brown - Beaufort), another
Etchells, USA 1299 (White/Fulp - Oriental), and J/80
Sweet Baby J (Team Robin - Beaufort). And,
sailing out of Richmond, VA, there is Melges 24 Carloan.com
(Travis Weisleder). Go get'em!
Last Reminder: Fishing Bay Yacht

Multihull-ers take note of a new addition to TMM's
International Small Craft Center: It's a Windrider 16. It is a
multicolored, rotomolded polyethylene and aluminum trimaran designed by
Jim Brown of Foster, Virginia. It was built at the Confluence
Watersports factory near High Point, North Carolina.
On Friday, March 25, Gary Jobson to speak at the
University of Richmond. His 7:00pm talk will be in the Moot
Courtroom of the T.C. Williams School of Law. If you have ever enjoyed one of
Gary Jobson's appearances, you know that his sailing topics know no
boundaries. No matter how many others attend, you will feel like he is a
friend stopping by your digs for a friendly chat about sailing.

SAILING website at www.ussailing.org now
for the latest official info. The NOR for the area ABC
South Quarter Finals (hosted by Hampton Yacht Club in May 21-22) as
well as the other two ABC area Quarter Final events (Newport, RI, and Larchmont,
NY) and the Semi Finals (Annapolis) is posted. This is the official NOR which
reflects final decisions on team numbers, etc. at each event. Also, the
deadline for teams who wish to apply for selection to compete is

matchracing@ussailing.net

submit a team resume.
This past weekend,
The Mariners' Museum, presented a first class, weekend long
program recognizing the anniversary of the Civil War naval Battle of
Hampton Roads. This coming Tuesday, and Wednesday, March 8th and
9th, mark the actual anniversary (1862) of the appearance of the
ironclads, the USS Monitor and the Merrimack (CSS
Virginia) in Hampton Roads. They did battle right where today most
southern Bay racers see action of a different nature under the watchful eyes of
some even grander "ironclads" stationed at the Norfolk Naval
Station.
CCV and HYC will
co-sponsor their annual
Race Management Workshop on Saturday, April 2, at Hampton
Yacht Club. Check-in is at 8:30am and the workshop runs from 9:00am
to 1:00pm. This workshop does not confer USSA race officer certification,
but is an excellent presentation for anyone interested in race management and
race committee work. John McCarthy will lead the workshop along with Dick
Boykin and Glenn Giles. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.
Pre- register by calling (757) 850-4225. The workshop is FREE and OPEN TO
ALL. (Pre-registered participants are guaranteed the 2005 CCV Race
Management Handbook at check-in.)
Quotable Quotes: "The real reasons George Washington stood [in the bow of the boat while
crossing the Delaware] were: one, the thwarts were wet, [and] two, someone might
have handed him an oar." From Bill Johnson, up on the Rivah.
Land Cruise: The organizers of the
Cape Charles Race (July 23-24) have organized a pre-season land
cruise (bus trip) on Saturday, March 12, to Bay Creek in Cape
Charles on the Eastern Shore for racers who may be interested in the
event. Bus departs from Norfolk's Bay Point Marina (on Little Creek) at
6:00PM this coming Saturday and returns around 11:30PM. Dinner, drinks,
dance (live music). For info and ressies call (757) 286-7500.
The best suggestion yet for Dave
Taylor's J/24, which he has named @#$%&!!!, comes
from a SBRNYCU reader who suggest Punctuation as
a " for use in polite circles " name. Otherwise, That
@#$%&!!! Boat, will do!
MURPHY'S
LAW: Seeing that list of all the starting dates for racing
activity in the southern Bay, along with the marble jar idea, brings to
mind this warning for us racers: Better get that fine
racing platform ready to go before you lose all your marbles!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
