When the National Hospice
Championship boats hit the starting line on April 15-17 in
Annapolis, there will be three southern Bay representatives on the
list: Sanford Richardson (Kahuna) earned the
right to participate through the Greater Hampton Roads Hospice Regatta and
James Covington, Jr is there via the Turkey Shoot Hospice
Regatta representing the Rappahannock River area. Chuck
Monsees, who frequently races his J/29 Rockette, in the
Bay, is there from Bath, North Carolina.
SPRING - It is here - almost:
As Lewis Carroll's Walrus said to those Oysters, "The
time has come...to talk of many things..." of shackles, Loop Locks, and
breathable smocks, and whether pawls have springs. Get your racing stuff
ready - the season is bearing down on us. HUZZAH!
Seems there's an incorrect date of
unknown origin circulating out there. Be sure you have the correct
one for the annual CCV - HYC RACE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP scheduled for
SATURDAY, APRIL 2, at Hampton Yacht Club. Check-in is at 0830 with the
start at 0900. The workshop is FREE and OPEN TO ALL.
Pre-registration is strongly advised - to pre-register call (757)
850-4225.
Gary Bodie will
be the featured speaker at the annual CCV Racing Rules Seminar
(and 2005 CCV Racing Guide distribution gathering) on Tuesday,
April 5. The event will take place at The Mariners' Museum,
Newport News, Virginia.
Wannabe racers:
Saturday, April 30, CCV offers a day-long, classroom and
on-the-water, clinic designed to help "newbies" learn how to get started
racing. Bring your own boat. Following a brief classroom
session and lunch participants will take their own boats (with a season CCV
racing skipper at their sides) and go out and participate in several starts and
"mini-races". Bring
at least one crew. A mere $15 for the skipper and $10 for each crew
covers all instructional materials and lunch. For info contact: Ben Cuker
at (757) 727-5884 or email benjamin.cuker@hamptonu.edu
The Smith Brothers - not
the cough drops guys - but, Trey and Brooks, sons of Sonny
Smith, long time racer out of BBSA's Little Creek Sailing
Association, have interesting sailing viewpoints that range from small to
tall. Trey is a former Mobjack National Champion and Brooks is the skipper
of the American Rover, the topsail schooner that plies the waters
of Hampton Roads.
Leroi Lissenden (skipper/owner of Voodoo
Chile) crewed on a friend's Tripp 33, Tripptease, at Miami
Race Week. The boat did well, finishing 3rd overall in a
PHRF class of 10. For detailed results go to the regatta website at
www.premiere-racing.com
In spite of threats of another Alberta Clipper, 50-some
determined racers and race committee folk turned out for the Racing
Rules Seminar and Race Management
Clinic Saturday in downtown Richmond, organized and hosted by
Fishing Bay Yacht Club. John McCarthy presented the rules seminar
before lunch and the race management clinic after lunch. Sharon Bauer
(FBYC) honcho-ed event.
MURPHY'S
LAW: The first day of SPRING is this coming Sunday, March
20. Remember to burn your socks!! Attend a formal burning
or have a private ceremony at your backyard grill. Just be sure you attend to
this required racers' ritual. Yours Truly, The Murphster, of course, will
burn two pair. /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing
spirit in us all.
