onSUNDAY, APRIL 17 IS CCV SPRING SERIES RACE #1 - ALL
RACERS MUST:
(1) Have a valid, current, 2005 PHRF rating
certificate showing the boat's rating and that it meets PHRF 4P Equipment
and Accommodations Standards; and
(2) Have an entry form in the hands of the
Principal Race Officer, John McCarthy, by 1300 hours on Saturday, April
16. (CCV Racing Members already have fulfilled this
requirement).
(3) NOTE: No boat may change fleets once
the Race Committee boat has left the dock.
The "Dirty Dozen" + 1 Got Tuned-Up Sunday -
13 race boats busted out to play in the CCV annual TUNE-UP
RACES in Hampton Roads yesterday and were rewarded with absolutely perfect
conditions - flat (mostly) water and 12 - 16 knot steady breezes. The
fleets got in two races and received complimentary post-race beverages from
HYC. Scoring corrections traditionally are not published for the Tune-Up,
but Bob Moseby's Cyrano looked particularly impressive
in PHRF A, and Alan Bomar's roundabout and
Chris Duer's Cavitation did well in PHRF
C.
Get ready to Rumble! The 2005 season
kicks off this coming Sunday, April 17, with CCV Spring Series Race
#1. Warning for the first fleet is 1100 hours.
Deadline for race entries is 1300 hours, Saturday, April 16.
(Racers who have 2005 CCV Racing Memberships and have completed all PHRF
requirements (see item above) are already good to go.) For
additional info, contact PRO John McCarthy at (757) 850-4225. Get that
boat opened up, cleaned up, crewed up, and juiced up! Let's go
racing!
PREDDY and PF FLYER First
for Southern Bay Race Week! Larry Preddy gets the
blue ribbon for being first to enter 2005 Southern Bay Race
Week. Larry, who makes his home in Portsmouth, will race his
Pearson Flyer in the PHRF B Fleet. Southern Bay Race Week is three days of
great racing and partying in the vicinity of Hampton Roads. Race venues
will be in the Bay off Ocean View and off Buckroe. Regatta
headquarters are at Hampton Yacht Club on Hampton River. CCV
(Cruising Club of Virginia), Old Point Comfort Yacht Club (OPCYC), and Hampton
YC are the event organizers. For entry forms and information go to the

John McCarthy (757) 850-4225 SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK , June 3-4-5 = 6
races, parties, live music, food, drink, and endless fun.
Boys of Summer - The racers on
roundabout (Bomar, J/24) get the real
racer award for this past weekend. Regardless of the cold
water and below 60 degree air temps and the northerly breeze, they shed their
foot gear and did both Tune-Up races barefooted!
Walsingham High School Sailing Team racer, Kelsey
Olsen, who also crews for her dad, Craig, on their
Olson 30, Namesake, said the water up at Deep Creek is still
cold. Her report is first hand. Saturday's racing off the Christopher
Newport University Sailing Team Center was eventually abandoned when most of the
fleet suffered from the flips due to high and cold winds, even in that protected
area.
47 Racers already are entered
in CCV's season long High Point Championship Series. All
have paid their fees and 40 of the 47 have completed their entry paperwork
and are ready to go in the first of the 11 races, April 17th, CCV Spring Series
Race #1.
Locals Likely for Prince of Wales Match Racing
Regatta - Word is US SAILING will soon announce the 6 teams invited to
participate in the ABC (area) South Quarter Final round of the national
Prince Of Wales Match Racing Championship competition. The May 21-22 event
will be hosted in Hampton Roads by Hampton Yacht Club. Expectations are
that at least two of the teams will be led by southern Bay skippers. Once
the invitations are made, and accepted, the names will be made public.
Stay tuned to SBRNYCU!
Mid-week Racing starts this week for
both of BBSA's racing groups. The BBSA Little Creek Wednesday night
races begin April 13th, and the BBSA Willoughby Racers open their Thursday
nights in Little Bay, April 14th.
Laser, 420, Vanguard, and board racers take
note: The annual Spring One-Design Regatta is set to go on
Saturday, April 16. Hosted by Hampton Yacht Club. For info
contact Tyler and Jane Moore at (757) 726-2130. Of course,
remember to suit up for the chilly water temps!
Flying Scot Fleet 185 will host Spring Series
1 on Sunday, April 17, at Rappahannock River Yacht Club - contact fleet captain
Tom Richardson at (804) 435-1181.
Word comes from temporarily-in-Florida southern Bay homie
Buddy DeRyder (SurfRyder), that on June 1st, Annapolis
Yacht Sales will open a branch office on The (Rappahannock) Rivah at the
Deltaville Marina on Jackson Creek. The office will be headed up by
Jonathan and Anne Hutchings, (804) 776-7575. The
new southern Bay location will add Beneteau Sailboats to the AYS repertoire
which already includes Sabre, Elan, Wauquiez and Beneteau Power.
Race YOUR Sailboat Clinic -
April 30 (Saturday) - CCV offers day-long, classroom and on-the-water, in your
own boat, basic racing clinic for (non-spinnaker) beginners.
Skippers who want to start racing will get a brief session on the essential
rules and paperwork, a lunch, and two hours on the water for drills and mini
races. A "seasoned" skipper will accompany the participant as he drives
his own boat during the on-the-water session. Cost is
$15 for each skipper and $10 for each crew he or she brings. For info
contact: Ben Cuker at (757) 727-5884 or email benjamin.cuker@hamptonu.edu
Deadline for registration - Tuesday, April 26.
Arrrrrgggh, me maties! Think seriously about
bringing family and friends to Southern Bay Race Week, June
3-5. The event coincides with the City of Hampton's annual
Blackbeard Pirate Festival, on the Hampton River, in downtown historic
Hampton, an easy walk (couple of blocks and within site of regatta headquarters)
from HYC, the regatta host site. Lots of fun shore-side stuff for
non-racing boat groupies.
US SAILING has
given special recognition to Chesapeake Bay race administration expert
Ron Ward (Annapolis). He received US
SAILING's Harman Hawkins Trophy at the spring USSA meeting in Newport,
RI, for his dedicated commitment to race administration. During his 42
year membership in US SAILING, among other accomplishments, he has served
as a senior judge for 25 years, Chairman of the Umpire's Committee, and much
more. Congratulations and thanks from the southern Bay racing contingent
to Mr. Ward!
If you are a multihull racer, you probably
wish you were in Long Beach, California at the US SAILING Multihull
Championships at Alamitos Bay YC! These folks will be trying to keep both
hulls going in the same direction for 5 days - April 13 - 17. The Hobie
Alter Cup is up for grabs!
MURPHY'S
LAW: Being trapped in a boatyard when racing begins is
a lot like being fenced in the backyard while the squirrels run wild. The
Murphster believes the time has come - pay the bill, kick out the jack stands,
and splash her. It she doesn't sink, go racing! /S/
Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
