Fishing Bay Yacht Club kicks off their "big
boat" racing season this coming weekend. Opening Day is Saturday,
April 23, and FBYC Spring Series #1 is set for Sunday, April 24.

CCV SPRING SERIES - Leaders of the Packs:
Meridian, Bad Habit, roundabout, and Midnight
Mistress The weather callers had 10-15 from the NE booked
for Hampton Roads yesterday, BUT less than 15 minutes before the scheduled first
warning, the lovely breeze went from NE to SSW (eventually). At one point,
boats were arriving at the race area from opposite directions, all flying
'chutes. Fairly quickly the SSW light winds won and racing got
underway. Of the 9 boats racing in PHRF A, Meridian (previously
named Scherherazade), Sledd Shelhorse's Taylor 40,
took the lead and held it through the corrections, finishing
00:1:35 (corrected) ahead of Dave and Bumps Eberwine's
J36, Sea Star. Christian Schaumloffel's Hobie 33
took 3rd. Bob Archer's Pearson 30, Bad Habit,
won the PHRF B fleet (7 boats racing) convincingly with a 00:3:11 (corrected)
finish over 2nd place Strega, Neal Garrett's
S2 9.1. Movin' On, Mike Austin's Beneteau FC8,
bumped up to PHRF B by virtue of the split changes in the region, finished
3rd. In the 10 boat PHRF C fleet, Alan Bomar's
roundabout, J/24, finished in top spot less than one minute (55 seconds
corrected) ahead of 2nd place finisher Incentive, Louie
Lewis' O'Day 27. John Blais' Pearson 30,
Stardancer finished 3rd. In PHRF Non-Spin (9 boats racing),
Jake Brodersen, Midnight Mistress
(C&C 35) took first, Tom Peddy's Impulse, Catalina
34, finished 2nd, and Bill Peach, Surprise, Alerion
Express 29 was 3rd. PRO: John McCarthy; Official Timer/Scorer, Dick
Boykin; Mark Boats: Glenn Giles, Bill Gibbings.
CCV SPRING SERIES RACE #2 - Same Time, Same Place,
Same Bat Channel this coming Sunday, April 24! It's not to
late to join the fun - for info call John McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.
Hey, Omar! Whether you
share a name with the famous Omar the Tentmaker or not, you can have a good time
and perform a valuable service by signing on with the Southern Bay Race
Week Tent Team. The regatta party tents will be raised Wednesday,
June 1, at regatta headquarters (Hampton YC) and struck on Monday, June 6.
Join up - previous tenting experience is not required. Call event chairman
Leigh Morgan at (757) 726-9649 to volunteer your
time.
BBSA Willoughby Racers began their first
of three Thursday Night Series this past week. Recall Thursday - windy
enough to make empty trucks creep on the CBBT and, damp, damp
cold. About half (15+) the WR fleet went racing anyway. As
Dave Bettis said, "That shows just how smart we are!"
It's a tough bunch over there by the aircraft carriers.
2005 CCV Racing Guides - In case
you were not able to pick up your copy during the CCV Racing Rules Clinic
earlier this month, you may pick it up at the HYC office. You must be a
member of CCV to get a copy of the Guide. Club membership is $25
(the Guide is free to members) and you may join at the HYC office and
receive your Guide on the spot.
It's official - ODU Sailing All American
Anna Tunnicliffe has been named to the 2005 US
NATIONAL TEAM in the Laser Radial class. Anna is listed as #2 (of
5) in Laser Radials. US SAILING High Performance Director
Gary Bodie (Hampton, VA) introduced Anna to the southern Bay
racing community in early April at the CCV Racing Rules Clinic.
Any race boat named for a "very good type of dark rum" has
got to be good - right? Scott Almond, BBSA Racing
Captain, explained his name for his Catalina 25, Anejo, which he
races in the BBSA Willoughby Racers Thursday Night Series in Little
Bay during the summer.
The Movin' On (M. Austin, Bene FC8) skipper and
crew have picked up where they left off last season. They travel by water
from Yorktown to Hampton and back for every race in the Hampton Roads
vicinity. Sunday, they launched and departed Wormley Creek at 0700,
arrived at the starting area, did the race, dropped off some crew at the
post-race "Dogs and Brew" gathering, and headed back to home. Don't even
consider anyone else for the "race commuters" award this
week!
When Southern Bay Race Week event chairman Leigh
Morgan announced the name of the first 2005 entry, she had
one of those name-face dyslexic moments. Leigh knew the first entry
came from LEROI LISSENDEN (Voodoo Chile), but her face
memory file flashed up Larry Preddy. Better yet, imagine Larry's
confusion, as he searched his memory banks (and probably check book records) to
recall entering! On hearing of the error, Larry Preddy, of course, was
chagrinned. "Just when a fella gets his hopes up to be first at
something... kicked to the curb again," Larry
lamented.
One of the area's notable young racers, Brett
Baker, has been accepted to The US Merchant Marine Academy at
Kings Point. He'll be a member of the Class of 2009. Not too long
ago he was an ankle-biter sailing in the Green Fleet at the OPTI Nationals at
Strawberry Banks (1999).
If you need a boat show fix, there's one
coming this weekend (Friday - Sunday) to the downtown Hampton City Docks.
Sail and power dealers are expected. The Downtown Hampton In-Water
Boat Show opens at noon, Friday, April 22.
This coming Friday, April 22, Portsmouth Boat Club
kicks off their Barnacle Friday Night racing 3 weeks ahead of
the original date. For info contact Rodney Paice at (757)
971-0202.
On The Rivah (Rappahannock, that is)
Racing: Yankee Point Yacht Club, actually on the Corrotoman, opens
their 2005 Wednesday Night racing May 4. And, three days later, May 7,
comes the Yankee Point Spring Regatta. For info on either, contact YPYC
Fleet Captain Joe Urban at (804) 462-6164.
Yesterday's CCV Spring Series Race #1 hotdogs, for the
traditional post-race "Dogs and Brew" on the HYC flag deck, were prepared by the
crew from first-to-finish Meridian. The Meridian
Gormet Team did a great job of cookin' ... and eatin' too!
Kudos!

MURPHY'S LAW: I understand the Marty
Steffans is heading up the Beer Pouring Crew at Southern Bay
Race Week. I plan to sign on immediately, of course, as Marty's chief
tester-taster. After completing those duties each day, I plan to
take up the vestments of official Snooze Meister! A lot of
responsibility, but your Racing Beagle is up to it!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
