#246 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday April 25, 2005 05:37PM
onSave $35 by entering 2005 Southern Bay Race Week (June
3,4,5) now. That savings can go toward "go fast stuff" for
the boat, "look cool stuff" for the skipper and crew, or ... well,
any good racer can think of something unhealthy or slightly illegal! Go to
the web site for entry forms www.hamptonyc.com/SBRW
CYRANO, COOL CHANGE, CALLINECTES, and
VIRGINIA H Top Dogs for a Day in CCV Spring Series Race
#2: It was cold, it became windy (as predicted), and boats
and people were fully engaged as Mother Nature put on one of her "winter is
over, when I say it is over" hissy fits. There was a bump
of 2 boats, there was broken gear, and there was a busted person (arm
during a jibe), but all in all the fleet did a good job and returned home in
good shape. Here are the top finishers in each fleet: PHRF A (9
boats): 1.Cyrano, Bob Mosby;
2.Meridian, Sledd Shelhorse; 3.Sea Star,
Bumps and David Eberwine. PHRF B (6 boats):
1.Cool Change, Rusty Burshell; 2.Strega,
Neal Garrett; 3.Movin' On, Mike
Austin. PHRF C (10 Boats): 1.Callinectes,
Ben Cuker; 2.Quicky, Mike Veraldi;
3.Roundabout, Alan Bomar. PHRF Non-Spin (6
boats): 1.Virginia H, Andy Armstrong;
2.Checks-in-the-Mail, Jim Williams; 3.The
Hunter, Justin Morris. Race Committee: PRO
John McCarthy; Mark Boats Glenn Giles and Bill Gibbings; Official Scorer/Timer
Dick Boykin.
There is a three week break before the
culmination of the 2005 CCV Spring Series on May 15. Races #3 and #4 of
the Series are both scheduled for that day. Same place, but the WARNING
TIME IS ONE HOUR EARLIER - make it 1000 for race #3, and race #4 starts
immediately after completion of race #3.
Picture yourself in JD Scott's sailing shoes!
Next Sunday, May 1, JD will be crewing on Pindar in the
Cape Town to Boston leg (6,775 miles) of the 2004 Global
Challenge. Pindar finished 6th in the Sydney to Cape
Town leg (6,200 miles). Look for an even better finish in this leg, since
they have taken on one of our southern Bay homies! Follow
Pindar and JD at the event website www.clobalchallenge2004.com
When he is at home, JD races his and Mark Shaw's Beneteau
42s7, Prevail, out of Norfolk Yacht & CC.
Sailing NOOD! Case Whittemore (FBYC),
Mike Veraldi (CCV), Pam Burdett (HYC), Scott Batchelor (HYC), Dennis Hannick
(DYC) are the Fearless 5 southern Bay racers who will be taking their boats and
crews to the Annapolis NOOD (National OffShore One Design) Regatta this coming
weekend.
Last Reminder: This coming
Saturday, April 30, CCV offers day-long,
classroom and on-the-water, in your own boat, basic racing clinic for
(non-spinnaker) beginners. Deadline for registration is TOMORROW,
Tuesday, April 26 - Skippers who want to start racing will get a brief session
on the essential rules and paperwork and the basics of how to negotiate the race
course, a lunch, and two hours on the water for drills and mini races. A
"seasoned" skipper will accompany the participant as he drives his own boat
during the on-the-water session. Cost is $15 for each
skipper and $10 for each crew he or she brings. For info and/or to
register contact: Ben Cuker at (757) 727-5884 or
email benjamin.cuker@hamptonu.edu
The classroom sessions will be hosted at HYC and the sailing will be in the
vicinity of Hampton Flats.
Hampton University Wins Regatta: The
Hampton University Sailing Team got a big win this past weekend. The
Pirates won the 6 team collegiate showdown hosted by Christopher Newport
University at the mouth of the Deep Creek Saturday and Sunday.
HU "A" Division skipper, Ray Potter and crew Yasmina
Beckels/Bryana Nicholas had an outstanding regatta, winning 7 of
14 races. HU "B" Division skipper Omari Scott and crew
Candice Franklin/Bryana Nicholas won their division
overall by one point. University of Maryland finished 2nd, Old
Dominion University 3rd, Christopher Newport University 4th, College of William
and Mary 5th, Virginia Tech 6th, and University of Virginia 7th. The teams
did 7 races in 420s and 7 in FJs. Next up is a championship regatta hosted
at the US Naval Academy this coming weekend.
Homie Trimmer Temporarily Out-Of-Action: James
(Jimmie) Mock, who has been trimming sails on southern Bay PHRF A boats
(currently Feather, and previously Sugar Bear) for many moons,
is recovering from serious surgery at Bayside Sentara Hospital in Virginia
Beach. His room number is 311 and his phone number there is (757)
363-6311, in case you want to keep him up to date on race course and other
happenings while he is out of commission. Get well, Jimmie!
Chilcoot, Alex Alvis' Quest 30, is
sure looking good on her current perch in the Deltaville Boatyard. She is
in the commissioning stage for the season. Chilcoot was
hurt near Wolf Trap during a race last summer and "healed" at the builders
location in Rhode Island.
Take heed - now is the time to enter and make
arrangements for accommodations for the mid-summer (July 17, 18, and 19),
mid-Bay (Solomons, MD) madness of the 2005 SCREWPILE LIGHTHOUSE
CHALLENGE. There are already 13 southern Bay (and
beyond to the south) boats entered for this season highlight event.
They are: Brad Miller's (FBYC) Schiehallion,
Pam Burdett's (HYC) Polar Express, David
Clark's (FBYC) Corryvreckan,
Lissenden/Krushelnisky (FBYC) Voodoo Chile,
Robert DeJong's (CCV) Temptress, Mike
Dale's (FBYC) Juggernaut, David
Shuttleworth's (DYC) Stars & Bars, Tom
Peddy's (HYC) Impulse, Dennis
Hannick's (DYC) Radio Flyer,
Lloyd Griffin's (OBSA) Cash Flow,
Mike Casey's (BBSA) Bowmovement, Case
Whittemore's (FBYC) Patriot, and Michael
Jones, (CBYRA) Outrageous. This is the Bay regatta that
has every base covered: fleet racing (PHRF), one-design racing, daily,
fleet overall, and "Battle of the Bay" best yacht club team trophies,
shirts, bags, bands, food, drink, great parties, a regatta daily newspaper (by
SpinSheet), and, oh yeah, really, really great racing! Plus
more. Go to the web site at www.splc.us for all the details and entry
forms.

the on-the-water sessions every Wednesday (5:30 pm) throughout May on
a race boat sailing in the HYC Wednesday Night races. The course runs May
3 - May 25. For details and to sign up, contact Neal Garrett at (757)

Volvo Penta of the Americas has signed on as a
sponsor of 2005 Southern Bay Race Week and Goslings Rum has stepped up
as presenting sponsor. The overall trophy will be the Black
Seal Cup, named for Gosling's Black Seal Rum. SBRW dates are June
3-4-5. Six great races + three great parties + regatta mischief
and mayhem = an event you do not want to miss! Web site is www.hamptonyc.com, click on the SBRW logo for info and entry forms. An added
attraction - Blackbeard the Pirate will be in town too at the City of Hampton
2005 Pirate Festival. Race, party, and enjoy pirate grog
and a good public cutlass clash or two; all within a block of one
another!
Downtown Hampton Public Docks Dockmaster, Rennie
Martin, says the 2005 Round DelMarVa 400
Cruising Rally will stop in there. The rally leaves
Annapolis, June 4 and sails down the Bay, out the Virginia Capes, turns left and
heads up the coast to the Delaware Bay and back down to Annapolis. A
great way to get some bluewater under the hull. For info contact Jim
Favors at (410) 353-7770.
MURPHY'S LAW: What a conundrum!
Sailing, of course, is the top priority for Southern Bay Race Week, but now I
have another really big decision to make. Do I get with a crew that
volunteers to pour rum drinks at the party or do I stick with the Beer
Truck Team??!! So much adult fun - so little
time! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
